I have to go with the solo on Cinema Show.  To this day it's my favorite keyboard solo and one of the more influential pieces on my Keyboard style.  I love how fragile the melody sounds the first time around, the beauty of the simple square wave patch puts the hairs on the back of my neck at attention.  The second time through when he adds the choir underneath is when it really shines.  Suddenly the soft fragile melody takes on a new sense of power with the choir underneath of it.  I've used so many choir patches when I was playing, all traced back to this moment.

Good to see Riding the Scree get some love! I agree, that's one of his best. I also love Cinema Show, that extended is possibly his big synth tour de force. It is very hard to pick a moment, though, as his playing is very iconic of the band and is quite distinct from the other big keyboardists of the time. Dance of the Giant Hogweed I agree is a good one, but rather than the intro I'd say the instrumental bit. That part is just sublime.

I've always felt Firth of Fifth, while extraordinarily impressive, is a bit cheesy, by sole virtue of the descending chromatic line in the left hand.

Wow, I wish people on this board would discuss Genesis more frequently.  I feel like I never hear anything about them or King Crimson when I'm looking through the threads.

If you use the board's own search button and you let it look for Genesis threads for the last six months and older, you get 13 pages of Genesis threads. You can always revive an old thread that you're interested in or make your own thread Wink

for Banks made numbers of great melody lines around the years with Genesis.

But the best is probably "The Cinema Show"...

Firth of Fifth-although the whole band is excellent throughout the whole piece,the piano-led interlude is Banks best moment in Genesis,and also the best passage of SEBP for me.

I have always been a bit weak for the middle section of 'Mad Man Moon'. I think Banks' playing is superb here. However there are better moments, many of them mentioned. I can't really decide.

I love the intro piano on Firth to Fifth but also the Synth solo in the middle with Phil Collins synchopaiting it nicely withs som tasty drum fills and rolls.

the piano intro to Time Table (my favorite Genesis song for the moment), and Mellotron intro in Watcher of the skye and the synth riff on Abacab is pure class

Bankshad so many great moments as this thread illustrated. His solos are often highly memorable because they are carefully composed and have great tunes.
 
As well as most of the ones mentioned, I love his Mellotron work on Seven Stones. The chords on that are just fantastic.

Always stays in my head for days after listening to it.  The opening to 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' I cant get it out of my head now you made me think of it.

Firth of Fifth (intro) - it's just beautiful. Otherwise Cinema Show. As somebody else said, there's some fantastic stuff on SEBTP

Cinema Show.  

This was the first Genesis track I heard (singles apart), the Seconds Out version.  It remains my favourite Genesis track to this day.  Banks' solo is wonderfully melodic, powerful and full of emotion.

It is absolutely fantastic, although it is somewhat ironical that Banks continually cites SEBTP as one of his least favourite studio albums with the band, owing to his poor performance (his quote). Isn't life strangeConfused
