Love me some Hasse.....though on the sole Nya Ljudbolaget release. What a great album that was (and is). I was rather surprised to learn that he later on joined The Flower Kings. A big change in style.
I was lucky enough to see Flying Food Circus supporting The Flower Kings years ago. That was fun and I agree with Sonia, the fun aspect is a bit missing in prog. Prog wasn't a plan back in the day and there was the secret! Pop was better too, for exactly the same reasons.

I believe that Prog is made for people with especial disposition. For example it needs a very especial disposition to enjoy Klaus Schulze.I bet 9 out of 10 will find him utterly impossible to enjoy.Pink Floyd are the most popular Prog band because their music can connect emotionally with more people than King Crimson for example.Music you love is directly connected with the disposition you have not your intelligence as someone mentioned few pages back.

There is an old saying " if you are bored its because you are boring" . My take on that as far as prog is concerned is that a lot of people find things that make you use your mind and actually think "boring". Like science for example. They would rather have something that is dumbed down and simplistc where they don't have to make any effort to understand It in their lives then something that challenges them intellectually. The same goes with music. I find people who think prog is boring to be boring...at least musically.

The problem with a lot of prog is that it lacks things like cohesion, feel, space, and relatability - IMO.
but when prog lacks cohesion, it's bad music if you ask me.
bad music?.. no there is lots of that. That is too simple man. Problem is that bad prog rock has the rightful and well earned distinction of occupying the lowest and hottest level of musical hell.
that is why the wisest of the wise in things music state that there is NOTHING.. nothing in music that is worse than bad prog rock. It isn't like getting shot in the head..it is over quickly... it is like being executed by a 1000 pin pricks..taking hours for your lifes blood to bleed out.... all while your mother laughs at you for your choices in music.... dressed in nothing but sexy lingerie... true hell man. Urggggg

Maybe itīs the fact that it is boring. People who think itīs interesting have such boring lives that they would think that... well im not even gonna bother finishing this thought because... thatīs the way i am. i always quit half way

I think one reason for it is that many people think of the lyrics and vocals as being the most important part of a song, and the music and instruments is just a background. So when the instruments take centre stage during a long break, people get bored waiting for the next vocal part to begin. Whereas to prog fans, the instrumental sections can speak just as much on an emotional level and communicate the feeling of the song as any words sung by a singer can.
^ Yes. Getting to the nub. Thing is unless a music fan is not used to listening to reasonably involved - and possibly lengthy music pieces they are conditioned understanding short ones. Radio oriented folks I mean.
Of course this might be ultra-presumptuous and arrogant of me to think of people in this hierarchical listener context but this is all part of the burden of being a prog fan. Still, I've known opera buffs I could quite happily feature in the starring role in so many operas - Tosca springs to mind; get rid of the patronizing swine forever...
It's the conditioning of environment (musically speaking) and the reactionary nature of the human psyche. Apparently there is progressive rock made outside of the '70s by people who were not making prog rock in the 70s. But it's only what I've read on this site. Might not be true... other than being true that it is rumoured...

I have to say that the one thing that REALLY irritates me about prog rock is the tendency for fans to overly nit pick, hair split and criticise. Given that 99% of all fans are not musicians, this leads to a lot of worthless opinion disguised as "expert comment."
If you don't play, that's fine, just enjoy it. Or not. Music is art, there is no right and wrong.
