Hes a pretty solid guitarist all over, and I'm not usually a fan of "shredding"

Hahahahaha he would do that too. Vai's got some good stuff, but overall he seems to be the personification of some of the uglier aspects of prog (i.e. the living incarnation of self-indulgence... five minute whammy-bar solos anyone?).
