Have always liked them. Bought Remember the Future on a whim and absolutely love it. Tab in the Ocean is also excellent. All their playing is underrated. Very good band.

I saw them at the War Memorial in Trenton N.J in the fall of 2002. When they played "Tab In The Ocean", the lights dimmed and the sound of the ocean through the sound system was beautiful and shocking. They played that piece really grand and it was a breathtaking experience. I bought many of their titles on LP in budget bins at department stores during the dreadful 70's. Many people were unaware of the fact that the band was english. I remember playing a circuit with them and at that time, they didn't seem to be rising high enough in popularity as it sometimes goes....they were touring the same venues as Happy The Man and many others that you could imagine. They were very great then as they are now but, nothing can compare to that time period when they toured up and down the east coast with many others from the prog genre. Interesting band.,

Hi,
I picked up their DVD of their show on the East Coast .. Nearfest? Or something like that.
Good. Not bad. However, maybe I am living in the past a little ... they sounded way better then, and I think the sound system where they played was not very good, which is becoming a concern for me ... some of these bands are NOT sounding good, or as good as they should and could!
And that hurts a lot of the bands that we like ... I love Gong, but it pained me to watch them twice and they were sub-par ... simply because it was Gong and our imaginations would fill in the rest.
Sadly, it doesn't work that way ... sometimes it carried a bit, but mostly it doesn't and one ends up comparing things, and the music and appreciation suffers some. I personally do not think that some folks are afraid of doing it, specially Daevid Allen who is an actor and he can do this night in and night out and still be good at it, but the rest ... sometimes is lacking! And this was evident in many bands and the only one I did not feel lacking was "Magma" ... why? The vocals and the drums are what carry the music! You live and die with them!

I have just bought all their discography I didnīt have.
Amazing band with very bad luck. Perhaps they needed more rock or more neutral pshicho what as ELP just to know huge sucess... Who knows.

I am almost sure that the idealism around the light show is what killed them. The massive co-ordination and everything else made their shows a bit more difficult than the average band, and I think that they were afraid that their work would not be as complete as it would otherwise be.
In the end, even a Nektar unplugged would be excellent, and the light show was not exactly necessary for me. I could live with the lyrics and the music just fine, but I am not sure that they wanted to come off just like any other rock band out there ... and that probably hurt in the long run.
I was always surprised that Mick did not take this into film and put together massive videos and films about the music and full of visuals ... most of us fans would have bought it ... and instead ... it died.
I liked the Nearfast show ... but it felt sad for me, really sad, and then Mo decided to call it a night! And while I can say that Roy is special, I really thought that Mo's bass was spectacular and often stood out way so much ... Edited by moshkito - June 02 2010 at 13:18 |

They are mostly a psychedelic/space rock band, with some nice heavier bits. Some similarities to Pink Floyd and Eloy.

They are such an interesting band when you listen closely. They get a lot of comparisons to early-pre-DSOTM Pink Floyd. I was watching Echoes from the David Gilmour dvd from Royal Albert Hall last night and realized how accurate that comparison really is. Roye Albrighton's playing is very similar to Gilmour's and the style and sound, especially on Nektar's Tab in the Ocean share alot with Floyd.

Not really sure what the protocol is on this site for the revivification of long-dead threads...but I've been combing through the back-logged topics, and this one caught and held my eye.
Nektar is just an amazing, amazing band. It took me a little while to realize this...I remember years ago, when I was just beginning to dig into prog as a genre, I saw them mentioned as a significant ban with a significant discography. I picked up Journey to the Centre of the Eye and Remember the Future, and was nonplussed by both. Remember, I was just a little, stupid prog fan at this point. About six months ago I started listening to A Tab In the Ocean. It didn't really do it for me at first listen, but for some reason I kept playing it. Again and again. And, as is the way of such things, is started to grow on me. Before long I found myself listening to it incessantly, and loving every single track. I adore all their seventies work sans Down to Earth, which I am still struggling with; not sure why, it has all the hallmarks of a great album, but it just doesn't do much for me. I've also avoided the questionable Magic is a Child, due to Roye's absence. More recently I hunted down their new stuff, and was blown away all over again: Evolution is such a radical release, truly progressive, far more so than the majority of 'old' prog groups that reunite for new efforts. Well...that's it, really. Just wanted to rant about how great they are. Especially Remember the Future...coeval to Thick as a Brick for me. Just great. |

The rule currently is after six months without any new posts a thread goes dormant and if it wasn't because an admin cut it off, you can always ask one for a reopening.
If you liked Evolution you will need to get Book Of Days. I think you'll like that one even better. Also the somewhat recent live reunion DVD. |

You made me have to put that one on.
![]() Man, that album took forever to become available. The remastered Roundhouse is really good. They didn't put all the same material on it but it's expanded. |

I am relatively new to Nektar. I downloaded all of their albums a few years ago from eMusic back when I had an account there. I listened to them a couple of times and enjoyed them, but can't say that I became all that familiar with them. I am currently listening to Journey to the Centre of the Eye and I am enjoying it immensely. I will be trying to give all of their albums another listen over the next couple of weeks or so. |

^ I really liked the last one, Book Of Days. Best of the new ones so far. I'd recommend going to that one, Tab, or Recycled next.

I will never forget a gig at my hometown including the also highly appraised Welsh MAN band in the early 1970's.
An unforgettable experience while they were jamming together at the very end |

That must have been awesome. I've only been able to experience them live through the "Pure" dvd, which I quite enjoy. They are one of the few bands I'm sorry I've never gotten to see.
