Topic: Norwegian bands for inclusion? Posted: August 16 2009 at 08:57 |
There has been a number of inclusions of Norwegian artists lately, mainly in Jazz Rock/Fusion (Eivind Aarseth, Terje Rypdal, Nils Petter Molvær...) but also other genres, like Gåte in Heavy Prog (odd choice, by the way - wouldn't Prog Folk be more appropriate?) and Tr-Ond & The Suburban Savages in RIO/Avant.
Still, I feel that the Norwegian prog scene is more diverse than what could be deducted from looking at the list of Norwegian bands in the 'archives, and perhaps also that a number of popular Norwegian acts deserve to be considered although they normally don't frequent prog venues. I dare therefore to come up with a few suggestions (in alphabetical order), and hope that a few of the people here perhaps know the Norwegian scene enough to give some comments: -- Airbag: "Prog at its most chilled, honeyed and soothing." Inspired by among others Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Radiohead. Crossover Prog? http://www.myspace.com/airbagsound elephant9: Fun, intense and complex jazz rock with among others members from Shining. Jazz Rock/Fusion. http://www.myspace.com/elephant9theband Farmers Market: Although not defined as progressive rock by mainstream media, I believe it could easily be argued that they fit in the PA company. Originally a jazz project, heavily influenced by Balkan folk music, incredible (multi-)instrumentalists, lots of leanings to rock - and comedy. Ectlectic? Jazz-Rock/Fusion? Prog Folk? Crossover? I honestly don't know. http://www.myspace.com/farmersmarkettheband Garbarek, Anja: Jan's daughter, playing experimental and prog-influenced pop. Perhaps not until Tori Amos has been included? - but in my opinion Anja is far more progressive. Crossover Prog? http://www.myspace.com/anjagarbarek Kaizers Orchestra: This is perhaps the widest stretch in this list, but their operatic, theatrical and conceptual music with odd instrumentation and odd rhythms will perhaps make them deserve Prog Related? http://www.myspace.com/kaizerso Lumsk: Metal, folk rock and prog in elegant combination. Rough, brutal, beautiful. Prog Folk? Heavy Prog? http://www.myspace.com/lumsk Motorpsycho: Norway's perhaps most innovative rock band, and I never understood why nobody has suggested them for inclusion earlier. Demon Box (93) is progressive rock through and through, and they incorporate (in different doses) elements of grunge, heavy, and jazz in all their albums. Heavy Prog? http://www.myspace.com/motorpsychopage Now We've Got Members: Folk-inspired experimental indie with members from postrock act The Samuel Jackson Five and avantpop act Tr-Ond & The Suburban Savages. Prog Folk? Post Rock/Experimental? http://www.myspace.com/nowwevegotmembers The Opium Cartel: White Willow founder Jacob Holm-Lupo's new project. Relaxed folk/prog/indie. Prog Folk? http://www.myspace.com/opiumcartel P:O:B (Pedestrians of Blue): Small, but solid progressive metal band with references to DT and Queensryche. Progressive Metal. http://www.myspace.com/pedestriansofblue Seigmen: Alternative, melancholic metal pioneers with obvious progressive roots, particularly in the early albums. For some reason going into a more emo/industrial landscape on later albums. Progressive Metal? http://www.myspace.com/unmsseigmen 22: Gåte's guitarist Magnus Børmark's new band, playing what they define as progpop. But their sound is perhaps a bit heavier than that? Neo-Prog? Crossover Prog? Post Rock/Experimental? http://www.myspace.com/tjueto Ungdomskulen: Up and coming rock act - one of the more popular of the new bands in Norway - and willingly admitting that they're a downright prog band. Heavy prog? http://www.myspace.com/ungdomskulen WintherStormer: Klaus Schulze's Berlin School. Nuff said. Progressive Electronic. http://www.myspace.com/wintherstormer That's a few suggestions. More perhaps deserves mention. Edited by Desoc - August 16 2009 at 09:00 |

Solid list. But we'll surely have to take each band individually and evaluate it.

Sagittarius should be added to this list too. They are doing Progressive Metal and are slightly progressive mental. They are also from the Sami region of Norway and are from the Sami tribe. Cool that Thule is included in PA. I am trying to get all their albums now. Prudence should be considered for inclusion. Well, Tyr are included so why not Prudence. Emperor should be on that "maybe considered" list too. Their final album was prog rock black metal and all their albums has some progressive elements. Whatever PA decide, and I deeply respect PA, Emperor is the best ever band from Norway. Perhaps Windir too should be on that list. I am a prog rock purist though and disagree with inclusion of half of the bands included in PA. But that is my personal opinion and we leave it like that. Torodd, you are completely right that Sagittarius and Prudence should be on this - in fact I didn't realize that Prudence wasn't here already, I took it for granted that they were. Prudence is 70s Norwegian prog in the vein of Junipher Greene and Høst - Heavy Prog or Symphonic Prog, I believe.
As for Emperor and Windir, I don't know them well enough to give any recommandations. I just watched my second Enslaved concert and although I enjoy the music I have some problems identifying the prog elements of a few of the black metal bands here. But Torodd, you probably know Farmers, Garbarek, Kaizers, Seigmen - do you find their possible inclusion uncontroversial? Edited by Desoc - August 16 2009 at 13:35 |

Prudence is one of my alltime favorite bands. Charming inept but still great. I do not know the newer bands in the scene. Kaizers is an unknown band to me. Garbarek should be included here. Seigmenn, I do not know. But again; I disagree with the inclusion of 50 % of the bands here and that is my holier-than-thou position. |

I appreciate Slartibartfast taking the Crossover suggestions up for consideration.
Will the others be considered automatically by the other teams, or do I have to notify them individually (I got the understanding that posting here would be sufficient)? And is there any way to follow the process, to know whether a band is accepted or rejected? |
