I think Mind in a Box, and a few other bands are close enough to prog that they deserve attention here..

Mind in a Box's discography are concept albums that tie together to form a great story. I think people should check out 'Crossroads' its the third album in the story, but its the easiest to get into.

If you think they belong here, suggest them in the Suggest New Artist/Bands board. Also a link to samples would be appreciated.

Welcome to the boards!

I've wondered this too (a long time ago) and came to the conclusion that the word "progressive" means something else with trance music. But of course that horrible P-word gets everyone opining about its definition, so perhaps that isn't the best reason.

The other (perhaps better) reason is that this is a prog-rock site, not a progressive music site, whatever that crazy word "progressive" actually means. Certainly if an electronic group/band fits the bill of what's outlined on the site, it should be considered for review!

For instance, while I'm no friend of hip hop, Outkast's SpeakerBoxxx/Love Below album is in essence a concept album and quite progressive. But if we start to include that kind of genre, we are getting away from the prog-rock side of things, which one could argue, is why people come to this site.

I wasn't too thrilled about some of the stretches the site has made regarding non-prog bands (such as Led Zeppelin) but at least those are still rock (with some progressive leanings).

EDIT: Oh, BTW, I like good electronic music, so I'll check out that band.... Thanks for the suggestion!

I don't think a concept album is the main criteria to make it progressive. Mind in a Box is a electro pop band.

We'd add it except we're stuck in a progressive trance right now. Confused

If we were to add progressive trance to Prog Archives, we should add progressive house, progressive breaks and progressive drum & bass subgenres, as well.

I think that artists belonging to these subgenres may fall in the already existing Progressive Electronic subgenre here in the archives, even though they may not sound like the traditional progressive electronic.

I would agree, but the Prog Electronic team doesn't like '90s electronica so it's not happening. Not even for Aphex Twin!

ShockedCry If there are any modern electronic bands that should be added, Aphex Twin would be first on my list.

mickstafa is right about 'progressive' having a somewhat different meaning in trance music, I would add that if a music has no detectable or musicologic connection to rock - as opposed to much electronic prog which does - it probably doesn't belong here

^^Yeah, that's probably the best answer. If we were to start throwing in everything that was progressive, rather than just rock and rock-related, then this site would become so broad and open that it would completely lose focus and wouldn't be very useful at all.

Mozart was creative, innovative, and extremely influencial, but it would be a bit silly to have him listed as "Proto-Prog," don't you think?

Maybe consider forming TranceArchives

I got some sampled up if anyone is interested.

The 3 albums in the discography together form a story set in an Orwellian futuristic society. The albums have high emphasis on the concept. The protagonist, Black, is a hacker. I recommend listening to all 3 albums in order at once, because its all about the flow and feel of emotions. Here are some sample tracks. I'm pretty hooked on Identity, and Redefined gives a very chilling feeling.

I think we should at LEAST add Mind in a Box on this site. They are labeled as futurepop but are a lot closer to Progressive Trance. Thus they are a Prog electronic band.

Our prog electronic section is mostly ambient music. Or perhaps, we should add an electronic archives site for all electronic music including IDM and 90's industrial.
