Circa Survive/ Dredg

I like both of these bands, but I can't seem to understand how they are progressive. They have good musicianship but that is all I can collect from listening to them. Can someone please explain how they are progressive?

I know Circa Survive aren't even in the PA, but apparently they are progressive somehow. I'm sure someone understands since there are a lot of people trying to get them into the PA.
