Watcher of the skies. After all isn't there a "Watcher" setting on the melotron these days? Thats a signature if ever I heard one,

I always figured either Dancing With The Moonlit Knight or the Musical Box made an excellent signature song. Supper's Ready isn't as consistently good as those songs, though it is an excellent side long, perhaps the best. For the pop period, it's either I Can't Dance or Invisible Touch.

Can you tell me where my country lies?
Supper's Ready and The Musical Box are their best songs, but maybe not their "signature". I Know What I Like would be another good pick for a signature song.
Re Collins era, it would be Land of Confusion.

Supper's Ready, of course.
Musical Box is a good choice. This is an aside, but I have my clock radio set to WTMD in Towson Maryland, and I woke up one morning to Carpet Crawlers. I sang along and it helped me start the day...

Nobody voted "Fountain of Salmacis" ? Nobody else but Genesis could have done that song - a personal favourite of mine.
But have to agree with "Firth of Fifth" and "Supper's Ready" - the latter is epic driving music especially over narrow mountain roads!

I'd agree that fountain of salmacis is their best track but do not think it is their signature piece : somehow it always lived in the shadow of the musical box

Although "Suppers Ready" is a song that I think deserves attention and is an historically significant song in the history of progressive rock and although "Dancing With the Moonlit Night" leads their favored album Selling England By the Pound, I have always thought that "Cinema Show" was their single greatest song creation. It has Peter Gabriel's humor and quick, clever character sketches, it has a great mythic reference and it has one of the best mystical statements ever made in a song...
"Once a man like the sea I raged,
Once a woman like the earth I gave...
But there is in fact more earth than sea."
And the progressive jam that follows sets the standard for all that have followed.

I am not sure what constitutes a 'signature tune' and I tend to think it is not the same as their best tune which is what some seem to have voted for here!? I would agree with 'SentimentalMercenary' as I think 'I Know What I Like (In your sock drawer) certainly used to be something close to this?
For more modern Genesis frankly mr shankley I don't give a damn!

"I Know What I Like' is a very good song, though "Suppers Ready" is a much better one |

As far as the Gabriel era goes, Supper's Ready is easily their signature song.
Phil era? That's more of a tossup. Misunderstanding is probably the closest.

Early on I would say it's The Knife. Then it sort of morphed over into The Musical Box. I mean, The Musical Box really have all the things significant for Gabriel-era Genesis; a great climax, acoustic folksy parts, slightly morbid storytelling and a general sense of quirkiness. And The Musical Box were the first track Gabriel dressed up to, the whole Foxy Lady outfit. But after Gabriel left the band I'd say their signature song became Land of Confusion, much to my dismay.
However, I'd say that the one overall signature song would be Carpet Crawlers. |

I am really surprised that "Watcher of the Skies" wasn't mentioned right away. There are many possible choices, and "Supper's Ready" is my favorite. However, and epic doesn't work unless that is primarily the format the artist is known for. So, it is "Watcher" all the way. "Return of the Giant Hogweed" wouldn't be a bad choice either.
