After the 'side-long tracks' poll, I decided to go one further and create a poll featuring two epics that span an entire CD. I'm aware that 'The Incident' has time on its side, what with being released only a month ago, but on musical qualities, which is your favourite, The Incident or 6DOIT?
EDIT: Changed the title to '...song' because the two songs are split into seperate tracks (14 and 8 respectively). Also, for those who asked, the bands concerned consider their works to be one song, split into several movements. Edited by RoeDent - October 02 2009 at 10:24 |

The DT one is pretty good but badly shadowed by the first disc of the album. The Incident does just that for its pair, on the album and on this poll.

Amarok. A true "disc long" track.

Thick as a Brick comes to mind. I would also to like to get some attention for 'Hypothesis' by Vangelis of which I think it is a masterpiece of free jazz/fusion.

The Incident isn't a disc long track or a disc long song or one unified piece in the slightest. Plus, it isn't that impressive either way anyways. So I went with the Dream Theater song (which also isn't a single track unless you make it that way). This poll is missing Light of Day, Day of Darkness.

No Garden of Dreams (The Flower Kings) nor ? (Neal Morse) in this poll?
![]() How am I supposed to vote? ![]() Going with 6DOIT, since I haven't heard The Incident yet. (ok, ok, I know... GoD isn't really a disc-long track, since there are 3 other songs in the first disc of Flower Power, but it's longer than 6DOIT and The Incident) |

Surprised we seem to be missing some of my favorites...
Echolyn - Mei
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Light of Darkness
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
For me, it would have to be 6DOIT, at least w.r.t to the poll...
But, I'd order them:
Jethro Tull
Green Carnation
Echolyn
6DOIT
Porcupine Tree

I prefer Green Carnation's or Beyond Twilight's disc-long epics over those two. Though I haven't gotten over The Incident, even unlikely since I'm not quite a PT fan, Six Degrees doesn't have enough class in overall, despite some great parts. But if I really had a choice, Six Degrees gets my vote.

None of it actually! ![]() But a more correct poll would have, as you say, Light of Day, Day of Darkness and Amarok. Plus anymore genuine disc-long tracks. I don't see SDOIT as one track. If it had been released on vinyl on its own it would be considered a concept album...imo.

I'll need to listen to The Incident some more before voting here (must have listened to the 6DoiT epic dozens of times) ... but it will be a close call.

Only two? You could've made this poll more insteresting by adding Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness for example. Anyway my vote goes to The Incident because it's a track that combines elements of everything this band had ever recorded. 6DOIT is a decent track but it also has a lot of cheese in it
