I have a question about Gryphon

They're classified as prog folk. Progressive Rock has broadened into progressive music since the term was originally coined. There are plenty of bands here on PA that could not be classified as "rock" even in the loosest definition of the word. I hope that clears some things up.

I have all of Gryphon's studio albums, and there's certainly sufficient rock for me to easily put it under the Progressive Rock category (I like all of their albums, by the way).  The first album is the least rock.  Treason is very much a rock album.

Since I first heard Gryphon long ago, I've always considered it to be part of Prog (i.e. Progressive Rock).  And I don't think there need be much rock in Prog (though it should have that influence).  It is a Prog Folk band, and that category has its own parameters.  A big part of Prog is fusing rock, using rock elements, and combining it with other genres.  Gryphon absolutely does that to my ears.  I see Prog in part as progressing away from rock conventions.   What rather surprises me is that Prog has not commonly moved farther way from rock conventions (while keeping rock elements).

yah of course, totally agree with you... but I was just wandering why Gryphon was clasified as a Prog Rock band, if there's no rock at all, based on what I've listened to.

That's quite an interesting point of view man, but since rock is a kinda new genre (compared with other prog rock influences as classical music) I can't really see how to go farther rock-wise, if you know what I mean.
