I would absolutely check Vandenplas out if I were you. You will not be disappointed if you like Shadow Gallery and Threshold.

PoS for the way they wrap several excellent melodies together at once.

Porcupine Tree isn't a prog metal band, though... |

I'm amazed, only 3 votes for kamelot?I mean, kamelot aren't my favorite band on this list by any means, but they sure know how to write amazing melodies.

I definitely do agree. Kamelot can write incredible melodies. But with Pain of Salvation on this list, they get left in the dust. |

Wow, this means I should probably try to get into pain of salvation one of these days. It's a wonder I still haven't...

How can you deny Rudess and Petrucci? Though Pain of Salvation is pretty good. I only have Perfect Element, but I don't listen to it that much.

Just listen to the complete Scenes From a Memory... no band can match with it...

I find Kamelot's and Symphony X's melodies to power-metal esque and too serious to be melodies I would really consider 'beautiful', but that's just my opinion. |

Too serious to be beautiful? Aren't most beautiful melodies serious?

I had to vote Dream Theater, because bands like them sometimes tend to go to the more poppy genre of prog, mostly in Octavarium. I Walk Beside You and Sacrificed Sons are pretty much very solid facts. La Brie's voice would just be excellent as a Fish replacement or something, and even with the metallic parts in those tracks it still sounds a bit pop and open to the wider crowd, and with that, they also had to provide better melodies. If they would just growl they would have a hard time reaching the rank of "Most polled band on PA", or something like that, however, all the argumental threads regarding the poppiness, have as you can see, given them a much bigger crowd than it normally would have.
I know I'm focusing too much on the poppiness and less on my point, so to clear it up, their "poppiness" requires melodies that are easier to understand, and easier to understand is basically just a nickname for catchy.

The prog metal band who has the best melodies should be my favorite band. No? Is there a more important quality in a band than the melody?

Can't believe Threshold aren't on the list, listen to their album Critical Mass and the melodies are outstanding. 2nd is POS though...the melodic songs on remedy Lane are fantastic. |

Damned shame that Nightwish aren't on the list, because (although certainly not the coolest band in the world) they produce great operatic melodies par excellence!
