- When you're the only one in the world who would rather hear Locanda Delle Fate's bootleg 1977 live album (with horrible sound quality) 1000 times over than any thing played on the US mainstream radio.
- When people look at you funny because you've never seen an episode of "American Idol" or "Dancing with the Stars" but you have seen a ton of youtube segments on various prog artists over the years. - When you disagree that Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna and Lady Gaga are the all time best musicians in history as MTV/VH1 will have you believe with their "100 Greatest Music artists in human history" shows/segments. - When none of the bands you listen to or like are on MTV's "Top all-time greatest artists in history" segments and when ALL of the bands you like are nowhere near to be found in the MTV/VH1 "100 Greatest Music artists in human history" or Rolling Stone Magazine lists. - When MTV/VH1's "Top 100 artists/musicians of all time" episodes seem to have 95 bands from the USA (from emimen to Lady Gaga to Coolio and IceT to Creed, etc..) and the other 5 token British bands like "The who", "Led Zeppelin", "Beatles", "Rolling Stones" and "Queen" *BUT* your personal top 100 artists/bands of all time have only 3 or 4 bands from the USA and the rest from England, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Hungary, Sweden, etc... - When Howard Stern has Lady Gaga on his show to do one of her unmemorable/non-creative faking-the-emotions "it's all about me" song and when she finishes it, he calls her piano playing "The best piano playing I have heard" and you're just begging to have Howard Stern listen to any one of the 50000+ keyboardists from all over the world on prog albums since 1969 and then see if he still feels the same way ![]() - When you go out to a business lunch or a bar and everyone around you (that you don't know well) is talking about how "freakin' great" Pearl Jam or Creed is and you just keep your mouth shut because a million other bands pop to mind in your head and most of them don't even speak english ![]() When you got up and walked out on Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show to listen to "Close to the edge" which runs about 40 minutes covering the same duration as the halftime show and then resumed to watch the start of the 3rd quarter after the Yes was finished and feeling glad that you did not have to suffer thru Madonna's self-consumed music. - When 99.999% of the American's and American media thinks Genesis' first album ever was Duke and you stopped listening to Genesis after "Wind and Wuthering" - When 99.999% of the American's and American media thinks Yes' first album ever was 90125 and you stopped listening to Yes after Drama. - You don't care that the FM radio in your car does not work. What are you gonna miss anyways by not having access to the american pop stations? All you care about is that your CD player functions so you can play your Zeuhl-cds. ....you scat guitar riffs that don't end!! (GUILTY AS CHARGED!...AGAIN!) |

When you are in a hurry to leave the house, but you can't stop the music before that 15 minute song is over...

+1. Right on. I do the polyrhythms when I work at Macy's and hear those mundane songs. On topic: ... when you have already come up with an 11-minute extension to Keith Emerson's piano solo in the 2nd impression of Karn Evil 9.

...when you're listening to a 30-minute track, you get up to go to the bathroom in its last 2 mins and you just HAVE to restart it when you come back...

When you spend an hour reading about how other people know when they are prog addicts,
or When you realize that listening to any other type of music is just chasing the dragon. |

- When you know that "House of the King" is not a Jethro Tull song.
- When you watch a 4 hours terrible movie because Wakeman made the music that is played during the final credits - When you believe that Triumvirate is a misspelling of Triunvirat - When you know the name of all the guys who played in Magma - When most of your friends hate your music or never heard about your albums except by you. - When you sing the "A Capella" part of Dancing with a Moonlit Night to your kid instead of a silly lullaby - When you know that "John Barleycorn Must Die" is not a new thriller with Bruce Willis - When you know that Emerson Lake & Palmer is not a law firm - When you know the legend of the Squonk and that The Giant Hogweed is a plant. - When you know the lyrics but you can't sing your favorite songs in the correct timing. When you hear a rhythm from the university's drumline that reminds you of "Contrasong" by Egg.

I once had a friend in high school who was into prog and we'd have 'Genesis choir', where we'd sing bits of Genesis songs and see how many lyrics we could remember. Once, (though not a Genesis tune), we recited all of the lyrics to "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers". |

My lullaby for my first daughter was the chorus of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes". The first time she watched the video she cried at the end because she wanted to see it again like it was a cartoon. Later I heard from a colleague that his daughter did the same with that video. |

Looks like little girls perceive music very very differently from the way some of us do. Probably it has something to do with age.

You know you're a prog addict when your music is too "underground" for hipsters.

You know you're a prog fan when if you listen to one good song from a prog band you've never heard of, you download their entire discography.
