Topic: Keith Emerson equipment on Welcome Back ... Posted: October 11 2009 at 16:53 |
Folks,
for a long time I was searching for a source of knowledge. Are you guys that source?
I am wondering for all the years what kind of instrument Keith is using for two tracks???
First: The Honky Tonk piano with Jeremy Bender / The Sheriff
And second the steel drum sound with Karn Evil 9, 2nd Impression. I guess it is the Moog Modular but I never heard something like that from the monster :-)
Appreciate your input
Oliver

There was always the rumor that for the piano sounds, thumb tacks were inserted into the piano hammers, to give it that old time 'western saloon' sound. Whether or not this is true, I have no idea.

Can you tell me where we're headin'? Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

The steel drum sound was definitely the Moog, it could have been either the Minimoog or the Modular...in the original manual for the Minimoog, there was even a diagram for the panel settings of that sound...
The tack piano is a popular way to get a honky tonk sound, it definitely sounds like that's what he did for those tracks...: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tack_piano

^ jplanet got the Moog part right. As mentioned, one way to get that 'honky tonk' sound on pianos is to put tacks in the hammers, the other way is to slightly detune the strings. Lots of home pianos are leaning towards that sound because they aren't tuned often enough.

Am I not right in thinking the steel drum sound was played by Carl?

You are definitely wrong.
Listen again, studio or live and think...keyboard.
I think its a polymoog actually or the precurser the "Polyphonic Moog Ensemble"
And the keyboard in The Sheriff is possibly electric piano.

Thanks Folks,
a lot of answers :-) I agree that the Honky Tonk sounds like a tacked piano but I was wondering if they used a piano for just one song. I had a look to the back of the album sleeve and there is an upright piano. This seems to be the one. From the left to the right you see the Moog Modular with an Hammond in front, the second Hammond with the Mini on top and at the back of the second Hammond that upright piano. Looking to the sleeve I found that there is another small keyboard on top of the Steinberg in the back: Any ideas what the hell is this? Coming to the steel drums. As far as I know Carl did not use any electronic drums or triggers. Agree that this is played by Keith.
Thanks again
Oliver

^ After "Hoedown" you can clearly hear Emerson introducing Jerusalim "featuring Carl there, on his synthesized percussion". I wonder how could you miss that

The steel drum sound in Karn Evil 9 2nd Impression was played by Keith on the Minimoog on top of his acoustic Steinway grand piano. The modular system was too far away from the piano for it to have been used. The piano used forthe Jeremy Bender/Sheriff medley was a Laurence Audio-Piano. As far as I know, he never used it for anything else. When I saw that tour at in Long Beach, California, they performed Benny the Bouncer instead of the Jeremy Bender/Sheriff medley, I only heard that when the 3 record set of that tour was released.

Of course, back then, electronic percussion sounded nothing like percussion...Carl used it mainly on the "percussion movement" of Toccatta....which basically sounds like one key of a Minimoog being hit repeatedly, while programmed to make a very annoying "wooooop" sound...

All the synthesizer sounds one hears during the drum solo in Toccata were triggered by the drums. In addition to that whoop sound that some find annoying, there's a short sequence that's triggered and various other patches.
