 Topic: 'Similar artists' OR 'you might also like' feature

I was thinking of a ''similar artists'' or ''you might also like'' feature on each band's page giving links within PA for bands which sound similar to that band/artist. I just thought Amazon is doing sth similar with products so why not PA introduce sth similar? This might motivate/lead people to find out about more artist they might like. On the negative side, this might be a large task to be undertaken and also opinions might vary on which artist is indeed ''similar'' to another. However it seems to me like a good opportunity for improvement

Amazon does it by automating the links between what people buy. We could do it by aggregating high ratings, but a lot of people don't bother to rate and with the variety of music here and the number of high star ratings for many things, I'm not sure it would be very accurate. Maybe it would work for Yes and Genesis, but nobody needs suggestions for those bands, and linking, for example, Nebelnest to anything else would be nearly impossible because it only has 16 ratings. And of course, doing it by hand is absurd and out of the question.

followed by one shameless but friendly plug ..similar bands and/or influences are usually mentioned in the bio, plus the person can come on the forums and ask (that's part of the fun, no?)

^Nobody cares if you opened one or not. If this time it is finally being discussed, that's what matters.
I support this idea though fail to see easy ways to implement it. The "bygenre" and high ratings option obviously the only one reasonable doable?

I don't know if I would use the term "virtues" ... probably not. I implemented something like that at PF, but it doesn't necessarily list similar artists ... it does list artists that have some aspects in common, but they might differ in other aspects and might not be that similar at all. For example, currently on the Opeth page it lists The Cure, Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd and Nine Inch Nails ...
