Ok, Yes releases Drama and Rush Releases Permanent Waves, and wouldn't you know it, both bands end up in your town at the same time. Who do you pay money to see? Rush or Yes?

I don't like both very much, but at least Yes is progressive.

1980 I would be looking for other bands.
Bowie, Crimso, Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, Kate B.
But i would have loved to c Jon & Vangelis doing Short Storie

Well on first glance this poll looked to be about which album i prefer between permanent waves and drama, and my vote would have been RUSH... but then you said who would i have most liked to see in 1980... and given that the bands would play their classics at the shows I will have to say YES as I may have a chance of seeing CttE

Permanent Waves is easily my favorite Rush album and I like it more than everything Yes has made. I'm not a big Yes fan, so of course my vote goes to Rush.

Rush was right in the middle of their most fertile period, that year I would have chosen them over any other band.

Yes for sure, their overall stable of songs was much stronger and the I've heard a few live Rush recordings that were downright embarrassing for sound quality which makes me wonder how the actual gigs sounded.

Rush is not nearly as good a live band as Yes is, so I vote Yes. I prefer Permanent Waves to Drama, but I would still rather see Yes. After Drama, I can almost care less about their following albums anyway.

Guys, keep in mind the question was NOT which album you prefer. I'm reading some of these responses and it seems that you misread the question.

Yes, because that's my favourite band.
That's not to say that a Rush show wouldn't be sensational (it probably would be). But even when I would see Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes instead of Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman back in 1980, I would go and see Yes. |

In '80 I was into Crimson, Heads, Gabriel, J & V, Yes. Bush and Bowie would come a few years later. Rush as well. |

A penny for my thoughts and yet I have to put my two cents in. What the hell is wrong with this equation?

I became a Rush fan in 1981, in the days that Moving Pictures was released.
In 1980 I knew Rush only by name, so I guess I would go to Yes (I've seen them in 1977). On the other hand, Yes had released a mediocre album in '78, followed by another in that very year 1980. Rush reached their peak in these years with Hemispheres, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.
So I vote for Yes because I did not know Rush at that time, but if it was one year later, I would have gone to Rush, surely...

I saw both bands at this time. Rush were awesome. Yes were absolutely shocking with Horn, and were booed off the stage in Deeside where I saw them.

![]() Lolwut? Rush has the reputation of being one of the best rock live acts ever; it certainly is a totally new experience when you see them live. Not that Yes isn't great, but that just struck me as an extremely bizarre comment. My answer should be obvious. |

Live Yes takes more creative liberties with their music than live Rush so I'd rather see them.

The biggest factor for me here is the line-up changes in Yes. Sure, Drama is a fun listen, but what about the stuff with Anderson and Wakeman. How will the new guys pull that off? So many unknowns here. Decisions, decisions. Rush is really at their peak as well. For me it's a tough choice.
