EDIT: Trying to say that top positions in charts are occupied by different genres of metal. And the same thing in maybe 20 years past. Well, some years for sure. Not prog rock site anymore, more like prog metal :-) Prog ROCK is death, long live Prog METAL
I don't know, but I think I even didn't fight with it. I gave 5-4-3 stars, respectively, to these albums. But as favourite genre, rock is declining a lot. I like it, but majority seems to don't like new bands. Edited by MartyMcFly89 - October 31 2009 at 16:57 |

I laugh at anyone who thinks Part the Second by motW is metal.

I'm not sure what you're trying to saw but The Great Misdirect is so much better than Anno Domini.

That's absolutely helpful post Walter, really. Alex, that's not the point of this thread. The main theme is that metal is strong these days. I contributed to this also, I'm not against it, but I would like to see more rock better rated these days. Maybe it's not metal (to me, it sounds like it, what about death rock growl, sounds silly, don't you think?), but post-rock it's not at all. And if it's experimental (certain parts are), I see it as exp metal. |

The only modern prog I like is the music which is actually following the true formula. That mean NO metal influence at all

I truthfully don't think metal is taking over too much, in fact the subgenre that's IMO is prospering right now is Symphonic, regardless of the rating difference

Look at the bands and charts. Metal in its variations has taken over. in a way.
O think Anno Domini is this year's best album and it combines elements of the new with the old.

I feel that I'll give Anno 5 stars after few listens and 4 stars to Beyond (this one just maybe, as I'm awed by death metal), but simply Metal rocks today |

It's shame that modern bands in RIO/ Avant Prog aren't more appreciated. I feel that's where the so-called Prog scene has been strongest for many years.

Lerts make one thing clear, Part the Second is not a metal album in any way, shape or form. Metal, particularly Experimental/Post and Tech/Extreme as the calssic prog metal bands seem to have got badly stuck in their ways, is where a lot of the creative enrgies are being best displaye at the moment, whilst also garnering a wide amount of attention. Not a lot new has been brought to Symphonic and Neo prog for quite a number of years now (bar a few exceptions) and I think thats been well reflected in the ratings and general interest for these bands. As Logan points out, though, other genres like RIO/Avant and Eclectic are pushing out inovative albums as well, they're just not getting the recognition they deserve.

OK, we can agree on this. After doing some research and listening, I've realized that you're actually right. My apologize. I've never been good at sorting genres, so the question is, is it rock ? |

I agree. ![]() And I certainly think that metal, heavy and alikes are taking over prog, not killing it, but certainly damaging it. Some of them are good, but few ones are interesting. I wouldn't rate any of them with a 5, since I don't think they are essential because they all have that same sound, and little personality due to the requirements of their style. They are highly overrated here by over enthusiastic fans. They sell well. And they are contaminating many bands. |

Death metal sounds not just the same for me, but I can't also stand it. Nothing new under the sun, but these two, The Great Misdirect offers really great guitars and Anno sound that I never met before. Making it very, very interesting. But still, metal is taking over. |

It is. It is even prog, some kind at least. But it is hardly adventurous, a characteristic which I think is highly relevant for prog. Even the more experimental ones always have the same rhythms and phrases, all the accompaniments are very much alike, and the general sound is so similar. |

God, was I really the only one who was horribly disappointed by the new Riverside??? There were so many disappointments this year: PT, Riverside, WitTR, Isis, Devin Townsend, etc... A lot of great ones too but the only "big" bands I can think of that delivered this year were Katatonia and BTBAM. This was a year filled with surprises and disappointments. Is that better than few new discoveries and surprises yet few disappointments? I'm not sure...
The new motW is amazing, but no, it's not even influenced by metal... |

Well, if it's not even 1% metal influenced, it's fine for me. So we have shift from experimental metal to experimental prog. Simply prog, that's safe to call it. Or isn't it ? Isn't, by opinions of some as I see :-) Too many unknowns here, but one thing is for sure. PT is disappointment for me. But I see this as great year for Neo-prog, many good bands released their.. |
