Well, the title says it all. I'm very VERY new to prog. But I absolutely love Pallas' album The Dreams of Men, with Invincible probably being one of my favorite songs of all time.

So, what would the experts here recommend for someone who is in love with this album? Something dynamic, dramatic, atmospheric, and hard-hitting is what I suppose I am looking for.

Thanks in advance Big smile

Seems like you dig Neo Prog. While I'm not an expert on the sub-genre I would suggest trying out some good Neo bands like Arena,IQ,Pendragon and Marillion.

I poked around in Neo-Prog a bit and it sounded, well.... off. I don't know, maybe it was the wrong bands. I'll have to look into it more. Although, if I remember correctly, Marillion's "Brave" sounded very good.

Thanks :)

Seconded, that's pretty much exactly who I would have recommended as well, though Brave did not resonate with me as much as it did with the majority of Neo fans.

Pallas are, to me, one of the four archetypal neo prog bands to come out of UK in the 80's, the others being IQ, Marillion, and Twelfth Night.

I am a Marillion nut, so I am very biased. I would recommend Misplaced Childhood from the Fish era, and Marbles from Hogarth era to start with, then you can progress to the rest of this fantastic band.

As regards IQ, you really can't go wrong with Dark Matter, or try The Sentinel for earlier stuff.

You would, I think, also enjoy a lot of symphonic prog. Genesis & Yes are the obvious examples of classic bands, but also try The Flower Kings & Transatlantic.

The rest of the weird & wonderful world of prog will surely follow.

Marillion's Brave is brilliant, but I wouldn't recommend it to begin with.
Marbles is a perfect starting point, and I'd also recommend Clutching At Straws from the FISH era!
Hope that helps, and I'd definitely check out Lazland's suggestions!

If you like the noe thing, then anything by Marillion from the Fish era would be a good start. would reccomend 'Script for a Jesters Tear' followed by 'Fugazi'

I would also reccomened anything by IQ, especially their albums from the 90's; 'Ever' 'Seventh House' 'Subterranea' and the more recent 'Dark Matter' and 'Frequency'

You may want to look at some the late 70's/early 80's stuff by Yes; 'Going for the One' (one of their best albums imo) as well as 'Drama' and 90125.

Rush is also a good bet. wouldstrongly reccomend 'Moving Pictures' and 'Signals' if you're neo inclinded. Personally I prefer old prog, but it's a vast musical landscape to explore, and no one genre is really any better than any other, it's all down to your personal preference. All have good elements and not so good elements. Happy exploring!
