Kayak has been one of my favourite Dutch bands since I was sixteen year old. They've had two progressive periods: The mid seventies and the beginning of 21th century.

My favourite Dutch band (though Focus comes close). The first album that I ever bought was from Kayak (Merlin, from 1981).

My favourite albums though are from the first period, the mid - seventies, and from these I prefer the debut: See See The Sun. I like the almost muddy sound of "Lovely Luna" and wonderful songs as "See See The Sun" and "Ballet Of The Cripple". The second album (self - titled) is almost as good, and sounds very much like the debut.

Some argue that the third album, Royal Bed Bouncer,  is the best because they are a much more powerful band there, but I prefer the earlier stuff which is more dreamy.

The fourth (The Last Encore) is still quite good but I don't like it as much as the other three.

My vote goes to See See The Sun.

As far as I know they have never surpassed their debut album, See See the Sun.

Great band! I only have See See the Sun, Royal Bed Bouncer, and a compilation which covers their first 3 albums (so I've heard most of the 2nd too).   Of these, my favorite is Royal Bed Bouncer, with "Life of Gold" being one of my favorite all-time songs.  Beautiful ballad.  Chance for a Lifetime is hilarious too.  If This is Your Welcome rocks hard.

I have to rank RBB at the top as it was the one that really made the band click for me.  Still a little cheesed off at them putting an American version that combined some tracks from The Last Encore with Starlight Dancer and calling it Starlight Dancer.  Not that I dislike the tracks on that one.  It was just such a bummer that I found out much much later after I'd become a big fan of the combo album.  LOL

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
