I'm a total fanboy of Rush and Yes but also greatly enjoy King Crimson, Genesis, VDGG(I hope everyone on here knows what that stands for ;)), ELP, Pink Floyd, Camel, The Flower Kings and Porcupine Tree.


So with the exception of maybe ELP who I think were great in their early days but kind of dropped the ball at some point and never really recovered(same thing with GG but at least ELP reformed), I would say I'm a fanboy of those bands I just mentioned.


As far as do no wrong goes for me it would be in this order:

Yes
Rush
Genesis
Pink Floyd
Camel
Flower Kings
King Crimson

or something like that. ;)

Beardfish seems to be that band. I have all their albums except for the debut, and they're all at least 4 stars. Very consistent, and progressive.

Not a whole lot of prog... but i honestly do enjoy every single album by the above bands except where noted.


Pearl Jam- I only have Ten, and a greatest hits CD, of theirs, but I like all that I've heard
Soundgarden- agreed. Like it all
Audioslave- Agreed, although I like their third album the best
Chris Cornell- I like everything he's involved in, but haven't heard 'Scream' yet
Alice In Chains- I love it all, including the new one
Jeff Buckley- he only had one album! And it was good! Does he really count?
Faith No More- I love everything they did....with Patton. Not so keen on their first singer
NIN- I only have a few albums, but enjoy the ones I have.
Peter Gabriel- Agreed
Queensryche- I only really like Operation Mindcrime. Never got into anything else of theirs
Roxy Music- don't know them well enough to judge, sorry
Stone Temple Pilots- Only have a greatest hits collection of theirs
Tool- Agreed
King Crimson- Agreed
Talking Heads- don't know them well enough

So I agree with most of what you say

I agree. Even though I am not to fond of some of the earlier material like Lobotomizer and the EP's of that time, there are still a lot of interesting things going on. From Demon Box and onwards they have been flawless. Their will to experiment and still succeeding is almost unbelievable to me. The most consistent band I can think of.

I agree with those who say there is no such band for me. There are some artists who only released a few perfect albums and then disappeared but had they stayed around i would imagine even they would have done some wrong! For artists who have been around since the Ice Age they usually do lots of wrong for somebody! Even my most favorite artists have some material that may not totally suck but is not as good as their best. Guess it depends on your definition of "wrong" LOL

Every band has a shelf life.  They peak and then begin to fade away.  Bands like Yes, Genesis and even Pink Floyd eventually felt the need to be more commercial and try to sell more albums.  As a result they may as well have decided to break up by those of us who appreciate artist integrity over album sales.  Still, if I had to pick a single band that could do no wrong I would pick King Crimson.  They do not compromise their artistic vision regardless of the pressure to sell lots of records and when they run out of things to say they take a break, rather than break up.

Based on the huge discografi they got, i tend to agree that Tull keeps up very high standarts.
Crimson did only good albums, but honestly some few tracks, i did'nt like that much. 
The Marts Volta was extreemly strong, but the last two albums, didnt do that much for me.
Decemberists good call, but relatively few albums.
Zep, ya supreeme, they might get my vote.

No-one ever sets out to write deliberately bad music but we are all human and subject to the vagaries of impaired judgement, time constraints and decay. Unlike the rest of us, Rock stars are immune from bad days at the recording studio?

Ok. As far as personal taste and opinions of my very own I'd list 5 bands that have personally never let me down in any way, where by every single song they have ever done I've generally liked and appreciated. Bands that couldn't do a thing wrong to me are SAVIOUR MACHINE, IQ (with Nicholls only!), ARENA and DISTURBED(not Prog but its accessable hard rock performed at its very best.) and of course NIN. All these bands have stellar/blemish free discographies in my opinion and I believe at this point they couldn't hurt my ears even if they tried. Lol.

Although. As far as true history goes especially in Prog, bands like YES, GENESIS, PINK FLOYD and BLACK SABBATH are always gonna have a huge following/intention from many whatever they decide to release. Bands like those 4 listed above are always gonna have a huge following and people are gonna tune in no matter what they do.
For example. Black Sabbath recently did 13 and to be honest it wasn't nearly as good as their 70's music, but it still did very well album sales wise and has got a ton of attention.

If Pink Floyd or Genesis decided to reunite in some way, that would be huge and to be honest probably sound great!

Yeah, I haven't heard Lobotomizer, or any of their EP's or live albums, so "I haven't heard a bad MP album" is what I should've said.

In my opinion Univers Zero, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Swans are such bands. Maybe Phosphorescent Dreams is not the one of UZ's best albums, it is preety good and I enjoy it. And I cannot wait longer for the new Swans' album To Be Kind and hope I won't change my mind about this awesome group. :D
