Topic: Telegraph Road Posted: December 26 2009 at 15:37 |
Hi! It's my first post on this site. Would like to know if anobody else loves the Dire Straits song Telegraph Road? IMO Dire Straits are the best classic rock band of the 80's. And this song, being a 15 min epic, has IMO a prog feel in it, despite not being prog of course...

I love the entirety of Love Over Gold, brilliant record. Some in the forum have tried, in vain, to add Dire Straits to the website on the basis of this record which many, including myself, consider it very prog-related.
But that's not the topic, anyways.
Yes, Telegraph Road is fantastic and I do consider it prog-esque. By the way, welcome to the forum!

Great song, great band ! And who cares if it's prog, prog-related, 100% non-prog, or whatever you want to call it. Great music is great music, period.

As Jerry Jeff Walker once said, and I paraphrase, "We've been down this road once or twice before." However this road, which appears to be so smooth at the outset, generally ends up in disrepair, cracks in the pavement and all, until it is nothing but a couple of old wagon-trail ruts, and that's the end of the Telegraph Road argument for inclusion here.
I loved Dire Straits at the time (still do). I love Knopfler's solo work. I don't know if it's prog or not -- general consensus has been not, and I generally just cede the argument.
For those who haven't heard it, you really should check out Get Lucky, his most recent. It's as good as any (including prog) album I've heard this year, and to me his best solo album ever, which of course stretches back more than a few years to Golden Heart.
I understand in some ways why Dire Straits is not here -- blame it on MTV -- but albums like Making Movies and Telegraph Road, while not prog, are certainly in the mix.
Sheesh, here I go on another semi-rant. I remember buying a couple of albums around 1980. One was Making Movies. The other was Abacab. Which one do you think I still listen to?
Missed that this was your first post. Welcome. Do not give up the fight!

I can take or leave Dire Straits generally, but Love Over Gold is a very good album. Telegraph Road is clearly the centre piece of the album, and does have an epic feel to it. I liked Private Investigation a lot too.

Love Over Gold is my favourite Dire Straits album too. I have always thought "Telegraph Road" as being "proggish" . I would personally be happy to see Dire Straits admitted into the "prog related" catagory.
