Alright, I have a $15 iTunes gift card.
 
I'm thinking of getting an album from the Spock's Beard / Flower Kings / Neal Morse / Roine Stolt / Transatlantic group of folks.
 
Some of you know my tastes. But the closest things to that modern prog I like are IZZ and the soft Sieges Even album. I actually have 4 songs from these guys already that people have given me in prog samplers:
 
SB: Crack the Big Sky, At the End of the Day, The Great Nothing
TA: Stranger in Your Soul
 
Any suggestions on where I should spend my card?

If you like "At the End of the Day" and "The Great Nothing", you could do worse than get the album where they originally appear, i.e. V. It was my first (and only so far) SB album, and I can safely say I like it, though nowadays it is not the kind of music I listen to very often. Same goes for Transatlantic's debut. They are both excellent albums in technical terms, though as far as 'retro-prog' goes there are other bands I deem far superior.

While it's their best, there's probably no reason for you to grab V from Spock's Beard if you have the two epics.

For you, I recommend Paradox Hotel from The Flower Kings.  Adam & Eve is great if you want some predominantly acoustic music from The Flower Kings (great album- do not let the rating fool you).  The Sum of No Evil is excellent if you are looking for something on the bombastic side.

The Light from Spock's Beard is an excellent album also.  Most people won't agree, but I recommend Octane if you want something more akin to progressive pop (but I love that album- what wonderful songs).

Transatlantic is fine, but I'd recommend all of the above first.

Just to give Jay more data, The Light is one of the worst albums I've ever heard in my life.

And I am a huge IZZ fan as well.

I agree with Robert.  While V is my favorite SB album, there's no reason to get it yet if you already have the two epics, because you already own 4/5 of the album.    My intro to SB and one of my favorite albums by them still is Beware of Darkness.  If you want to check out TFK, Space Revolver is the place to start with them. 
 
You could also do worse than picking up TA's latest The Whirlwind.

The Whirlwind

Here's how I would rank the albums:

1. Snow - Spock's Beard
2. ? - Neal Morse
3. Bride Across Forever- Transatlantic
4. Sola Scriptura - Neal Morse
5. The Sum of No Evil - The Flower Kings
6. V - Spock's Beard
7. The Whirlwind - Transatlantic
8. The Kindness of Strangers - Spock's Beard
9. One - Neal Morse
10. Space Revolver - The Flower Kings

I am a rabid Neal Morse fanboy, so it's obvious TFK took a backseat in my list. If you're going to get into anything related to Neal Morse, I would start with Snow and ?. All 3 Transatlantic albums are excellent, by the waySmile

Of those I would choose Paradox Hotel.  Still, I'd pick Space Revolver first if it's available.  As for Snow, I enjoy it, but it's not my favorite of the Morse-era SB.  In fact, I'd place it below the self-titled post-Morse-era album.

That new album is not as good as the last (although as I gave the last one 5 stars it would be very hard to be), but very enjoyable and worth getting, I think.

Transatlantic's first two albums are better than everything in the Flower Kings and Spock's Beard discographies as well as the Stolt & Morse solo albums. I would get those two. If you really want more, I'd recommend Neal's Sola Scriptura.

No one's suggested the Stolt/Morse combo platter of Wall Street Voodoo.  So I will.  It hits a slightly less prog, almost classic rock kind of feel.
