Anyhow, I love/hate "Amsterdam", which I discovered after my girlfriend (after two or three years) broke up with me. I've never forgotten it since!

It's been a while so the only thing that I remember is the chorus to Gideons Bible: " Gideon lied and gideon died - The force of china felt
Gideon smiled as gideon died - The thought of china held."

Beautiful album (read my 5 star review) I don't normally like folk-rock, but this is one of my favorites.
Hard choice between Big White Cloud and Gideon's Bible, but my vote goes to Cloud.
P.S. Cale is prog, we just have him in related till one of the proper art-rock genres picks him up.

Big Cale fan, just listened to this album the other day, but don't have a favorite song on it. Now, if you'd asked about Paris 1919, I would've said Andalucia without hesitation.

I haven't heard Vintage Violence, but I'm starting to get interested. John Cale's best albums (in due order Music for a New Society, Paris 1919 and The Academy in Peril) have one thing in common: it's hard to pick a favourite track.

John Cale's solo work has always seemed a little lackluster to me, but I do like this album, and my vote goes for Ghost Story. All the songs are pretty good, but that one stands out to me for some reason. Maybe it's the abrupt ending.
