You will never be disappointed when you buy an Al Di Meola album. Hard to choose but which one is your favourite.

Really don't mind if you sit this one out.

Hard for me to say. As much of a fan as I am there are a few I haven't heard. Splendido doesn't get the full respect around here I think it deserves. One of his most diverse ones that Al did, so it gets slammed for inconsistency. Oh well. A little bit of trivia Roller Jubilee was used in a Minute Rice commercial many years ago.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I like The New Sinfonia as well, but there is not jazz fusion, but world fusion. Great warm music influenced by Piazzola and played acoustically with italian musicians (acordion, classic guitar and percussions, beside Al)

Casino is just as good as Elegant Gypsy, in my opinion.

I like early DiMeola very much but my favorite period is with World Sinfonia, especially Grande Passion but the first two also superb.. then his synth/acoustic period on Manhattan Records [Tirami Su and Cielo e Terra], and I'm also fond of Scenario

Elegent Gypsy and Casino are both very good. Double lp Splendido Hotel has the best Al Di Meola pieces, but also some lesser tracks. A single lp with the best of Splendido would have been my favourite otherwise.

Could you please tell us what "lesser tracks" you are talking about. For me only two pieces doesn't deserve much attention. One is "Bianca's Midnight Lullaby" which is a very short one (1:56) and "I can tell" which does not smell Al's music and maybe "Spanish eyes". All the rest are great |

ADM is mostly unexplored by me but the 4 albums I have all havve some very enjoyable music. I don't have any of his first four, which seem to get the press, so I guess the next stop is EG. I voted for Scenario and I also have Kiss My Axe, Orange and Blue, Infinite Desire, World Sinfonia and Flesh on Flesh.

his first, Land of the Midnight Sun, is very good but also very dated-- great if you're a fan or early fusionhead

Scenario, with its who's who of the rock and fusion movement of the time - including yet again the distinctive Jan Hammer - was written up at the time of release as being the "last jazz rock album", a moot point but admittedly lot more jazz fusion sans rock was to appear soon after.

Elegant Gypsy although I dig all his seventies stuff. Soaring Through a Dream really suprised me. I thought, "oh no ", Al has gone new age! It's got some very romantic sh*t on it that you can play for normal people.
