SVT, Swedish Television has announced the line-up for this years Swedish Eurovision finals and Pain of Salvation is among the contestants who will compete to become the Sweden's contribution to Eurovision Song Contest - Oslo 2010.

The band will perform at the first semi-final which takes place on February 6 and I will keep you all updated on the band's progress!

Now the change of direction on Scarsick is finally making sense. Cry

Oh bullsh*t.

The new album is going to be very different from Scarsick. I think Gildenlocks said the song for Eurovision is rather folksy. Tons of folk on Scarsick lemme tells ya!

I don't know about you, but the new Led Zeepelin-y and Rainbow-y vibe on Linoleum is a big, positive step from Scarsick.

Scarsick is such an awesome album. Cheers to Pain of Salvation for doing whatever they want to do.

Maybe it's due to my recent discovery of Mike Patton and Faith No More, but this latest direction of Pain of Salvation is better than I'd hoped for. Making some fantastic rock/metal tunes with depth and toned-down-yet-amazing vocal shenanigans is a brilliant turn for the guys. And there's nothing wrong with aiming for Eurovision... though I would imagine they are still far too strange and progressive to make it anywhere there. For all the straightforwardness of Scarsick, they never once sacrificed progression. The only time they failed to be progressive was One Hour by the Concrete Lake, their worst album by a long shot, which is mostly typical cheese progmetal.

America? I mean, sure, it was bad, but so was the rest of the album.

The last year's winners can basically do whatever they want since there is almost no chance for them to win two times in-a-row.

Did you guys check out the Pain of Salvation-link I posted? I get the feeling that the band is aiming to establish an entirely different image for themselves. Btw, they are going to perform the title track from the new album which, to tell you the truth, doesn't sound all that promising anymore.

PS
You can see their contenders at the bottom of the page-link I posted.

I hope Road Salt makes it, though I've heard that Gildenlow was surprised is was that one of the three PoS songs he submitted that was chosen (from what I gather the bands in Sweden dont make the final choice on the songs they perform, they submit three possibles and its one of those that gets chosen by a comitte) as its more singer/songwriter territory than the others.

Eurovision sucks, it's a shame that a band like PoS even think on preforming there, most of the preformances being playing there are way too popish for them.

Maybe they made a lot of music and then though, "Hey, I wonder how far we could get into Eurovision with this?" I bet it was a reaction to their latest musical move and not a reason. Maybe they figured they could spice the contest up a bit with some actual, real, quality music.

I hope that they are able to raise the quality standard of the Eurovision Contest, but I fear that they are coming too late. The contest should have been abolished long, long ago.

I just noticed that the link I posted previously has been updated with a video presentation of the band! I'm not sure if the video can be accessed in all regions so I'll translate the basic message here:

Gildenlöw: PoS is a band that likes to redefine their relation to music and play all different types of music mostly in other countries, but now also in Sweden.
As a song, Road Salt, is a mellower moment for us. In most cases I have a tendency to write about the loss of things, the loss of oneself and the loss of ones way in life. This is one of those way in life types of songs and was created after that we went through... well it was basically a tough year in many different ways.
I've said it before... it's a little fragile song that contains great power that refuses to give up.
...then the band sings an a cappella version of the chorus to "Dansa I Neon"...
Gildenlöw: Anyway, this one is good and should have won (refers to the Eurovision Contest).

PS
I just realized how much I suck at translation. LOL

I just saw this (they're on in about 5 minutes probably) and think it's horrible. Still if you want to see them at Eurovision, maybe it's possible to do an abroad vote by sending "04" to +46 72 211. If you want to see a prog band performing in the worst thing that has ever happened to popular music, that is.

Yes, the performance felt definitely out of place in comparison to the other seven contributions, but hey, at least we've got to hear Road Salt on national television. Wink
One thing that really didn't make sense to me was that all the band members were on stage despite it being a completely acoustic number. I definitely wouldn't want to be the drummer in that situation!

The results are coming soon, so I'll keep you all posted!

Actually, I quite liked the song.

But they're not going to win.

Yay, at least they've got a second chance which is probably more than Daniel had ever hoped for! The performance was great but you have to agree that it felt out of place among the other contestants who were performing pure pop material.

Hopefully soon there is going to be a video uploaded to YouTube for everyone to enjoy! Big smile

I didn't hear any other song there (it was a tough choice to even look at PoS when Zlatan and Barca was on at another channel) but I think Gildenlöw did a really fine job and I'm sure it was the best there (from my subjective elitist point of view). Though the whole thing felt a little awkward, as only he and their keyboardist actually did something on stage (and keyboards were probably playback, as it normally is in a "show" like this). Guitarist and drummer just sat around on the stage, looking stupid.

To me, the song mostly proved that a small and uniform excerpt from a progressive work often is not progressive at all.
