This proves that you CAN churn out an 'epic' and a ton of prog fans will eat it up no matter what it's quality.

It's always funny to see how different people end up liking very different things. I think A Nightmare to Remember is one of the biggest pieces of crap DT ever recorder. It turns out it's the second favourite song from the album. I also think that, other than the Count, the only other listenable song is A Rite of Passage, which has a very strong chorus and is great to sing along live. Well, according to this poll, A Rite of Passage is the worst song on Black Clouds. LOL.

^ I was thinking the same thing, I can't believe that I was the only vote for "A Rite of Passage".

I submitted the very same poll not long after BC&SL came out and back then I voted for The Shattered Fortress, but now I think A Nightmare to Remember has just overtaken it. I can't believe A Rite of Passage has only got one vote, with that lovely chorus and great instrumental bit in the middle?! Oh, well ....

People seriously voted for Wither? There were like three new parts in the entirety of The Shattered Fortress, an anticlimactic end and album filler. A Rite of Passage was lame, Jordan's solo was weird. A Nightmare To Remember is definitely quality, and The Best of Times was good when it strayed away from The Ministry of Lost Souls. But The Count of Tuscany is hands down the best.

I voted for one of the most touching songs of DT in recent years... you have a problem with that...???

It's close between Count and Nightmare, but I voted Count.

I can't vote because I like all the songs and I think that it is the best album since Octavarium.
I think they did a great job with this album i even like it more Six degree, awaken, and falling into infinity.
It has to be one of tops 5:
1. metropolis Part2
2. Images and Words
3. Octavarium
4. Black Clouds
5. Train Of thought

I went with The Shattered Fortress for all of its subtle allusions to other DT songs that I love.

I have to agree. In a musical world of mediocrity I turn to prog. My choice may seem contradictory to my beliefs in listening to the music with the best musicianship but sometimes a song like wither just touches your emotions and those are the ones that become meeningful. Musically many of the others are better choices but Wither is just the most meeningful to me and emotional.

The album has actually improved a lot for me on repeated listenings. I didn't much like it at first, but now I think the tracks are quite good. The only one which doesn't really move me is The Shattered Fortress. Yeah, its a good trip down memory lane, but it is really just a hodge podge of the 12 step suite. Nothing new.
A Nightmare to Remember or The Count of Tuscany is my favourite. I'll go for the Count.

A Nightmare to Remember, the only good song on an otherwise forgetable album.
And I used to be a really big DT fan once upon a time.

I agree that the lyrics for these album are at the best cheesy, if not completly ridiculous. Many have complained about Count of Tuscany, but for me the absolute winner (or looser) on bad lyrics here is A Nightmare to Remember. I just try to ignore the lyrics when listening to this album, but with this song it's rather difficult.

This is the first Dream Theater album in which I liked absolutely none of the songs.

Their best album start to finish in quite sometime.....I enjoy this album A LOT!! Play it all the time. I had to pick A Nightmare to Remember, since it is the first track and had me hooked from the second I heard the thunder. I too dislike Portnoy's growling...he needs to stop the vocals and stick to percussion. I think I would hate it if Neil Peart began to sing, plus his big nose would hit the mike all the time...LOL!!!!!!!

I actually find the Count of Tuscany-lyrics appalling. It's basically a story about a count that frightened Petrucci while he visited Tuscany. If that's epic story telling then count me out!
