With Shining's new release, Blackjazz, it's a good time to see what you folks think of it compared to their previous albums.
I myself, still rate Grindstone the highest with the new one and In The Kingdom... following, but I haven't heard their first two albums (which are said to be different in approach).

Unfortunately I've only heard Grindstone, so I won't vote. Cry

...but that particular album is a must have! Thumbs Up

Totally agree with your post. I haven't heard the new one either.

I've only read the book and seen the two different movies, so I can't vote either. Wink

I've just heard Grindstone on Last.fm yesterdays and it was very good! Very interesting band. Notice: the first four albums can be streamed online for free at last.fm:

Also, the recent album has 4 out of 9 tracks streamable: http://www.last.fm/music/Shining/Blackjazz

I've heard the first four albums, and think Where the Ragged People Go and In the Kingdom of Kitsch are on the same level. After that is Sweet Shangai Devil. I don't particularly like the direction they took on Grindstone and what I've heard of Blackjazz, I could barely endure it...

I would probably rank them the same as you. Their latest three are all pretty close in terms of quality though.

Slightly OT, but in relevance to the heading of this topic it's only fair to point out that there's phenomenally much output from the Norwegian jazzrock/avant scene in general these days.

Shining - Blackjazz
Jaga Jazzist - One Armed Bandit (Shining's frontman Jørgen Munkeby's old band)
elephant9 - Walk The Nile (with Shining drummer Torstein Lofthus)
Supersilent - 9 (with elephant9 keyboardist Ståle Storløkken)
Motorpsycho - Heavy Metal Fruit (with among others Jaga Jazzist's Mathias Eick)
Jono el Grande - Neo Dada
Farmers Market - Surfin' USSR (with Supersilent drummer Jarle Vespestad)

- all excellent albums!

Good to see something other than metal come out from the north.
