So somehow you were lucky enough and got Devy as a member of your band. But now you have to choose, because he only agrees to perform one duty. Ziltoid-voice: Which one shall it be?

Composition...I could actually play the guitar parts if he wrote them. Vocals would be close second. His isn't the most naturally beautiful voice but he does so much with it. Production and programming are also something that others could do once he wrote the parts.

Of course that basically me and my boys would be his cover band....wait you may be onto something.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

It's a bit of a catch 22 because if you had him on stage singing or playing guitar it's going to draw an audience which is what you want right? On the other hand if the songs suck well...

I tend to think his production talents are good, but not THAT good.
He is a good engineer, but his mixes aren't quite up there with the best (Andy Sneap, Daniel Bergstrand etc).
I'd make him a guitarist

It'd be tough to pass up putting him in charge of composition, but in the end, that'd make it just another Devin Townsend based band. I think Devin has a really great voice (especially when he doesn't growl), and would definitely utilise that.

Producer. No man can produce tht same wall of sound that he creates in his mixes... if not that, then vocals.

I'm quite sure plenty of producers can create that wall of sound he does.
It's more to do with his actual composition than production anyway.
Give any good mix engineer a dense and layered composition and he will give you a wall of sound that sounds clear and defined

As a fletchling composer, I would let him take over the production duty as he could show me how it's done and what methods efficiently works.

I'd put him in charge of bringing coffee to the studio each morning.

Production of course.
I like Devin, but wouldn't like him to write my stuff, as I write my own stuff.
If he can do some vocals too, I wouldn't say no.
And some guitars too maybe.... :)

I doubt it would sound the same... He does have a signature sound, there is no denying it. True enough, partly is the instrumentation and part writing, but a lot is down to production as well.

I take it you don't really think very highly of his production Harry

I love his attention to detail in production but I cannot pass up a chance to have him on vocals. I mean we could strap a guitar on him as a vocalist anyways, but for the sake of this poll I think I would be fine with him on vocals exclusively. This is a great poll; it was a difficult decision.

He has a signature sound, that is true, but so do many other producers, engineers and mix engineers.
Whether the wall of sound will sound the same if Andy Sneap or Randy Staub mixed it, I don't know, but guys of that caliber are no less capable of doing it than Townsend.

Townsend is good, but he's done some rather questionable things on his productions.
The band Darkest Hour springs to mind. The guitars are a bit overly fizzy and a bit mid scooped on the albums he engineered and mixed.
AFAIK, he mixed Dichotomy by Becoming the Archetype. Cool album musically, and the production is by no means bad, but again the rhythm guitar sound is a little too thin and mid scooped for my tastes.
His mixes for his own projects tend to come out better than the stuff he does for other bands, since obviously he is more in touch with the actual music and is better able to tailor the mix to suit the music.
He's good enough to a pro, I'm not denying that, but I don't think his best strength is mix engineering for other bands/artists other than his own work

I picked vocals, he's just got that incredible voice.

No, scratch that.

He's got several incredible voices. And a damned good vocal range to boot.

Vocals, because that is one thing that the band I'm trying to form needs.  (I've actually heard very little of his stuff.Embarrassed)

He could be the opening act when I toured, but that would be the extent of it.

I wouldn't want him in my band. His gigantic ego would clash with my ideas... If it's my band it better be MY band, and I doubt one can have a band with Devin wherein he accepts to keep a low profile...
