 Topic: John Zorn projects - which one is the best for you

John Zorn is one of most contraversal figure in modern avantgarde music, and on PA as well. For a long almost all his project we placed under his name there. Whenever they are very different by music played and musicians participated, now they are separated on PA. Which John Zorn connected project you think is the best?

Don't think we can compare Masada and painkiller, not the same climates. I don't have a personal favourite of his projects, they are all worth checking out provided you are "open-minded".
On a general note, I don't have a personal favourite musical genre (my signature says it all).

That "solo" option needs to be either taken down, or detailed (Filmworks? occult series? etc.)
The original Masada gets my vote for how utterly brilliant it is. Both the Anniversary and the Book Of Angels don't match it. I wouldn't say Electric Masada or Masada String Trio are world-apart as projects.
Things aren't going that well with Naked City, because of my incompatibility with metal. I was actually most opened-minded before trying the albums (for sake of being something John made), but I didn't enjoy everything. Leng T'che was shockingly incredible. So a decent aftermath, considering how, on the other hand, The Moonchild Trio albums are simply unbearable to listen. Painkilller and Hemophiliac will likely be the same.
I'm listening to his Filmworks next, plus the Cobra albums, the Parachute sessions, and various collaborations.

I agree,that "solo" is too formal option, but I think there are pros and cons in it. In fact, everything what is recorded as John Zorn solo is what is mostly him. Very eclectic - yes. It was possible to separate to few more section, but it will be too ..... scientific IMO.

Difficult to choose, Masada is very different from Filmworks and also from Painkiller.
Also the "solo" works are and island in itself.
Hard to choose because i love almost his all output

I love Masada, and am currently trying to decide if he actually has any other jazz projects. It's looking unlikely.

^Electric Masada. IMO, nearest to jazz-fusion John Zorn's project, and excellent one  .
Voted for Naked City though

I haven't heard any Masada String Trio or Bar Kokba from Zorn's Masada related groups. Have heard Naked City's self titled, but I didn't like it anywhere near as much as I have Masada. I think I'll have to vote for the Electric one, although I hate voting against Masada.

I'll go with Bar Kohkba; The Circle Maker, Bar Kohkba and Lucifer: Book of Angels Vol. 10 are 3 of Zorn's strongest albums. I'd strongly recommend them to anyone who is put off by his more extreme projects (I'm not, but just saying). The Circle Maker and Bar Kohkba are usually credited to Zorn solo, but they're performed by Bar Kokhba, so I went with that. (And these would be considered chamber-jazz, for LiquidEternity)
Electric Masada was close, but it came down to two great releases vs. three. Acoustic Masada has been nothing but great for me too. His solo albums can be great, but consistancy is not as high as in the offshoot projects mentioned above.

I really glad to read your opinion! I agree The Circle Maker is one of greatest Zorn & Co. album! And not as radical, as Naked City, which is great as well ,but too hard core for many.

Electric Masada, just ahead of Painkiller. I like some Naked City albums, but for me they're a bit hit and miss; I think Moonchild would be my third choice.
Much as I like Masada, I don't think they really belong in this poll - it's rather like comparing Miles Davis pre Kind of Blue with his mid 70s fusion albums.
