I don't have the largest collection of Magma at the moment; just MDK, the remake called Mekanik Kommandoh, & Hhai. I'm leaning towards the last album just because i know i'll be getting some Hhai material from reading about it in wikipedia. Which is the overall favorite?

'Best' is a tricky choice, but if you want to hear them in order K.A. is actually the first part of the trilogy and Emmenteht-Re is the last. Rather than  getting Kohntarkosz itself, stick with Live/Hhai, which includes a truly spectacular version of Kohntarkosz and also some of the themes that would be developed more fully on Emeneteht-Re (as Wikipedia correctly states).

It's a safe bet that sometime in the next few years there'll be a live recording of the Kohntarkosz trilogy to go with the excellent Theusz Hamtaahk box set from a few years ago.

Emehntehtt-Re is my favourite of those.  I also prefer Live/Hhai to the Kohntarkosz studio.

I'd say confidently that K.A. and E-Re are the best two.  Beyond that, my voting is solely based on which one is behind at the moment, so I'll give it to E-Re.

Love the album, but definitely disagree with your opinion.

Nothing against the other albums as I love them all, but KA is the album that got me into zeuhl and RIO/Avant-prog in general.

Exactly the same here (I should also mention two previous disastrous encounters with Magma via MDK and Live/Khai).

Yep, my first Magma album was MDK, which I did not like the first couple times I heard it...KA opened up the whole genre for me and MDK is now my second favorite of their studio albums.

My fisrt album was MDK and it was love at first listen, but these days I never play the studio album as I prefer other versions.  Retrospektiw I-2's version as well as others blows it out of the water, imo.  I think the first song I ever heard from Magma is "'Iss' Lansei Doia" (off 1001 Degrees Centigrade) and that one that made me a fan remains amongst my particular favourites.

I'll go with the original. Although I'll admit the performance on the live album is probably even better.

The other two are very close, though. These are probably my three favourite Magma albums.

I'd love to know the reasoning behind how one thinks one piece is better than another. This is after all progressive rock, well thought intelligent music that required considerable effort to write and record. Opinions I think should reflect that input. You can't be wrong (in like vs dislike) but I, for one, would love to know why. You don't HAVE to back up an opinion but I'd just like to know.

Of course if some says something is stated to be great or rubbish then it does HAVE to be justified. And saying "it's rubbish, 'cause I hate it" is not good enough for prog rock fans either.

I just like objective depth and seek to encourage it. After all I think 90125 is a superb AOR album, well composed, played, produced but it's not favourite with me - too sweet and happy for my taste even though it's superbly done. So it's a four star album if I reviewed it but I would not want to really buy it now. That's by way of example.

Back to Magma, I am familar with the first trilogy but oddly only Kohnkatosz from the live album (and ROIO vesions of the rest) but we mean official releases so these don't count. Until they get released officially that is like the Brussels 1971 jazz set.

I suppose I can read the reviews but that doesn't mean I get the objectivity. I used to read the PA reviews but so many are happy fans wanting to support their childhood days (Beatle fans) or haters (Final Cut fans vs haters) that observed critique seems a bit beyond many. Not forgetting the recent Dream Theater uprisings etc. Progressive also means we listeners have responsibility to opine as thoughtfully as the music reviewed is intened.  Don't worry you can say how much you feel, just say why. Tell someone who has not heard it what it is, how it's made etc.

K.A.
E-Re
K

The top two are quite good, though I prefer KA for some reason. Never really had love for Köhntarkosz. I agree that the version (of the song) on Hhai is much better.

Wow! Kohntarkosz' got the least votes? Its my favorite, by far. Just perfect. There's loads of fantastic music on both KA and E-Re  but I'm having a hard time with the moments of joyous gospel feel. Especially on KA.

Am I the only one who think the studio version of Kohntarkosz is better than the hhai version? I used to like Hhai, but now it is just impossible for me to listen to Part 1 live without getting bored. Part 1 on studio is much better. Part 2 I'm kind of split on, but i think I am biased because after listening to part 1 live i can't concentrate on part 2 so it doesn't have the impact, but i do enjoy both a decent amount. I feel though that if that Kohntarkosz Trilogy DVD ever gets released then I'll enjoy all three versions equally.
