Sixty-Nine was a German duo created by Armin Stöwe (organ, piano, synthesizer, guitar, vocals) & Roland Schupp (drums, percussion). They played very The Nice-influenced knd of symphonic prog with krautrock "touch". They recorded only one studio and one live album (the latter more in jazz-rock vain a la Hardin & York).
Discography:
Circle of the Crayfish (1972)
Live! (1974)
Review of their debut from www.shinybeast.nl:
"Sixty Nine were a rock based instrumental organ drums duo following in the footsteps of Hansson and Karlsson. Given the limitations of such a small setup, it takes quite a bit of imagination and sound variation to keep things interesting. On "Circle of the Crayfish", they do manage to get some outlandish sounds out of the organ, and combined with the riproaring tempos, the group do keep things hopping for the most part. Theres even an introspective electronic piece. "

The whole album is 90 cents? That's odd. Too bad I can't buy it (I don't have a credit card), the samples don't sound bad.
I've asked the Symphonic Team to have a look. Edited by harmonium.ro - April 28 2010 at 03:57 |

Any decision about Sixty Nine? It was quite a long time and I have no doubt it's a prog band. If not enough mp3 samples I send link to harmonium.ro via PM. Hope it will help.

They are heavy on the keyboards like Emerson. Fairly good overall, a bit like Booker T and the MGs at times or The Nice in their ealry days. The Hammond is everpresent and there are some odd time sigs. Its all instrumtental. I like the dark synths in 'Paradise Lost' and 'Crayfish'.
Symphonic in places, I wonder what the rest of the team think.

Any idea what happens with this suggestion? I thought it was quite obvious for inclusion on PA...

Ozzy, Guigo has voted in favour of Sixty Nine, I have voted against their incluson in Symphonic (even when I believe it's Prog but belong anywhere else) and we need another vote to decide.
Please have patience

I votes Yes to symphonic as SixtyNine were so similar to ELP... i think they will be soon added now.
You want to send some info on the band here? A bio, that is, that might help?

Here is my biography for PA addition. I hope it's ok...but it will be better if some native English speaker will check it : "Sixty-Nine is a little known German progressive rock duo created in 1969 by keyboardist Armin Stöwe & drummer Roland Schupp. They gained quite significant popularity as a live act and thanks to this they could play (often as opening performance) on many rock festivals with such bands as Beggar's Opera, West Bruce & Laing, Pete York, Golden Earring, UFO, Birth Control, Amon Düül II, Frumpy, Jud's Gallery, Agitation Free, Guru Guru and others. In 1973 their only studio album "Circle of the Crayfish" was published by Philips Records. By the end of 1974 double LP "Live!" with material recorded on concerts from Hamburg and Mainz was released, and few moths later Sixty-Nine disbanded. After break up Stöwe founded (together with Reinhard Karwatky and Ingo Werner) Trio AIR. He also worked in GENERAL ELECTRONIC PLASTIC STUDIO (which was created by him and Werner), where he developed many innovative synthesizers and other electronic gadgets along with speakers systems. By 2005 Armin Stöwe committed suicide in old army barrack near Berlin (full of synthesizer rarities such as PPG-based computer, Oberheim synthesizer, Moog Modular System and hundreds more items), where he spent last years of his life. Roland Schupp's career after Sixty-Nine break up is unknown. Music of duo Sixty-Nine is a mix of symphonic progressive rock & Krautrock. Stöwe's organ playin' is very much The Nice/ELP influenced, and even his voice is quite similar to Lee Jackson's one. Stöwe played a typical collection of keyboards - Hammond organ, Minimoog, Hohner Clavinet - and took over bass-pedal. In general Sixty-Nine can be recommended to fans of other duo bands, like: Hansson & Karlsson, Hardin & York, Rustichelli & Bordini, Twogether, Atila and Magma." Information taken from German websites (so I had to use Google translator, I hope there is no mistake on my bio): http://www.krautrock-musikzirkus.de/de,Full_=_Description_=_257_=_N.html http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armin_St%C3%B6we http://www.krautrockseite.de/sixtynine.htm http://www.mp3-ogg.ru/viewtopic.php?p=240889&sid=5564048ead1917378dea9348a0ae27f6 http://www.roxikon.de/rock/rock-formationen/sixty-nine/ |

Good work Ozzy and Scott.
Even when I don't agree with the addition, it's good to see the team works with democracy.
Scott is addibng them.
Iván
I believe I'll be adding a Symphobnic thread in the open section for Suggestions and replies of the team only (Not discussions), but I have to talk with Guigo ans Scott. Edited by Ivan_Melgar_M - July 17 2010 at 23:30 |
