Hi all, what do you think about this interesting Folk Rock band with connections to Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and Gryphon. I have heard only their 1978 album Rise Up Like The Sun, and I like it and I consider it at least Prog related. Do anyone know them? Should they be added to Prog Related or to Prog Folk or not at all?

Here is a Wiki-entry on the band: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albion_Country_Band

For those who have Spotify, the album that I have heard (and some I havn't) is featured there: The Albion Band – Rise Up Like The Sun

I will try to find more info

Here is a quote from an Allmusic.com review of the album The Prospect Before Us (an album I have not yet heard, but I must soon!):

"One thing is certain in this uncertain world — you can trust Ashley Hutchings [SSOTS: founding member of both Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span] to do interesting things with various areas of British folk and rock music. In the case of the Albion Dance Band, under its various names [SSOTS: I think they were first called The Albion Country Band then The Albion Dance Band and then just The Albion Band], the focus was on mutating traditional English dance and folk music, which led to escapades involving traditional tunes, Morris dancers, double drummers, dance callers, Philip Pickett's entire collection of medieval instruments, and serious rock guitar front lines that tend to leap onto the hay cart and start blazing away."

From this you might get an idea of what they are about. Since Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span are both here, The Albion Band might fit here too.

I will try to post more info and relevant links later

I too have only heard Rise up like the Sun, a seminal British folk rock album.  I did see them live in a more acoustic format in 1993 and they were amazing.  Might work for prog related

Prog related maybe.  I think they would have a tough go of things if we tried to shoehorn them into Prog Folk.

I agree, even though some bands already in Prog Folk are less progressive. Blackmore's Night anyone?

Can we have The Albion Band evaluated for Prog Related then?

I've listened to a couple of tracks lately streamed, and would certainly support them in prog-related.

No doubt, but generally speaking we don't remove bands once they've been added (although there have been exceptions - Neutral Milk Hotel is the most recent I can recall).  They are moved from time to time.  I personally am not a big fan of Blackmore's Night, but all things considered they would likely be reasonably considered progressive folk by most people - we folkies tend to paint a pretty broad swath in claiming music for our own. LOL

Now if you wanted to take on the Sallyangie or Bluehorses you'd probably have some folks that would readily agree....

I've been consulted by the admins over this prog-related business

here is my take on it (copy/paste from the PM)

When I first  got the Prog Folk job a few years ago, I discovered Albion and Albion Dance Bands and even the Albion Country Band , all fronted by Ashley Hutchings (or created by, because he left soon after most of his post-Convention groups). I don't know how you feel about these three but to me they're pure folk, with traces of Folk Rock, but I really don't see much prog at all..... So none of these three are up for prog folk or will be ever be.

If Fairport is already in prog-related (and I've come to terms with Steeleye Span's inclusion >> they're a good fit in prog-related).... then ADB, AB or ACB are prog-related-related, which is quite a stretch for PA inclusion.....
