Love both bands, and they would both probably be in my all time top 10. I prefer Gentle Giant, though.. a little more consistent in their prime.

Gentle Giant anyday. I don't really like The Mars Volta at all.

I love the Mars Volta, simply love them.  But IMO, they can't hold a candle to Gentle Giant.

I was expecting this to be alot closer... I mean, GG is more fun but only by a hair. But then The Mars Volta did make Cicatriz ESP... This is a toughie. Probably still GG though

Are you kidding?  Gentle Giant is one of the greatest bands to ever pick up instruments, and The Mars Volta is a lame copy of King Crimson with a super-annoying singer

Gentle Giant is excellent, but The Mars Volta is the greatest Modern Prog band.  They've got my vote, and I'm shocked at how much they are losing now.

I do consider The Mars Volta to be one of the most(if not the most) creative band from the 21st century, however they're not really my cup-of-tea.

Voted for Gentle Giant.

The Mars Volta are losing because Gentle Giant came before.  Basically that simple.  Pair any major prog band of yesteryear with one from today, and it'd be the same story.  Yawn.

For me, it'd be choosing either magnificence and occasional poorness rolled into one or four star consistency.  No vote.

GG certainly deserves the overwhelming respect they get on this site, but they've never really sucked me in. TMV has an eerie quality to their sound that I can't get enough of. If I never heard GG again I wouldn't notice. TMV...not so much. I vote Volta.

GG = PROG rock / TMV = prog ROCK

Nothing i've heard by the Mars Volta has excited me as much as stuff by GG.

Alucard, Isn't It Quiet and Cold, Pantagruels Nativity, Wreck, The House The Street The Rom, Plain Truth, Three Friends, Advent of Panurge, Knots, The Boys In The Band, Think of Me with Kindness, In A Glass House, Cry for Everyone, So Sincere, The Face, No God's a Man, Valedictory, Cogs in Cogs, Proclamation, Talybont, Mobile, Free Hand, and On Reflection... I've liked each of these songs better than anything I've heard by the Mars Volta.

I don't really think that would be the main reason, it is all a matter of tastes, voting for a band just because came before, and not because of the music...would be actually ridicolous.
I voted for Gentle Giant anyway....(and believe me, not because they came before)
