My Favorite one is The Downward Spiral, I consider it one of the best albums of the 90s.

Downward Spiral is awesome...but The Fragile has the most variety and progression period. Glad to see NIN on progarchives!

Let me be the first to vote for The Slip, really solid effort. I like my NIN lean. Year Zero was great too, Reznor has been on a roll of late.
I like The Fragile and The Downward Spiral too though.

Woah
When did these guys get added?
Also I went with the downward spiral. That album is fantastic.

How could anyone on a prog site not pick The Fragile? Very progressive, obviously a concept album, produced by the producer of The Wall, and the first album that got away from the whole industrial rock genre and featured plenty of different instruments.

I jumped on the bandwagon with Spiral, depressing, angry, noisy. But it had a Belew cameo. And a Warm Place and Hurt as well as parts of other songs make this a prog album for me
The Fragile has some nice proggy songs, too: La Mer and The Great Beyond for me. Like Sprial it's largely a noisy and depressing affair, but if you can get past that and the profanity...
When Reznor started putting out albums on a regular basis, The Year Zero gave his work some more prog cred. In This Twilight and Zero-Sum come to mind in particular. The Ghosts album really clenches NIN as a prog artist for me.

The first is pretty hateful, and it was a downward spiral from there.
They really proved themselves to be on fragile ground with their Yes rip-off, and the next album actually was toothless. Year zero was a nothing year for them as the title implies (no zero to hero there). The next album showed no spirit and had about as much substance as an apparition. Though you'd think the quality couldn't slip even further downward, you'd be wrong.
If only they'd just slip and slide away.
But seriously, I've hardly heard anything of the band and have no opinion about the music, nor this fragile addition. Maybe I'll check them out.

To the curious who want to explore individual tracks, off the pretty hateful album: Something I Can Never Have. The instrumental Pinion and second track Wish from the EP Broken should be checked out.
If you want some cheery music, NIN is not where you want to go. There is actually good musicianship and intensity in these albums. Not for everyone, but hey is there actually anything here that is?
