Octahedron is great and mellowly consistent, but Amputechture has "Tetragrammaton," which as I just mentioned in another thread, is their greatest song.

If you like loud insanity, get The Bedlam in Goliath.

Get Amputechture.  It's one of their most jazzy-metal albums... it's a little more raw and guitar-oriented than  De-loused... and Frances..., but don't let that put you off.  It's actually my 2nd favorite album right after De-loused.  Yes, Tetragrammaton is the highlight; a truly amazing feat from an amazing band.  There are many great songs off the album, and the album as a whole is highly enjoyable.

Definately Amputechture, but don't be too put off at first if you don't think much of it - I didn't. After a while and a few good listens it became possibly my favourite of theirs (so hard to choose a favourite from day to day) also because it has Day of the Baphomets, which while being maybe the greateast thing they ever made, has a kick ass bass solo at the start (and a weird little bongo drum solo near the end)

"Day of the Baphomets" followed by "Viscera Eyes" are my picks for best tracks off Amp. Some of my favorite grooves are on those two tracks.

I picked Octa, but Amp is a must own too. Bedlam is the only record of theirs imo that isn't a must.

^ I agree. Bedlam isn't a must, but it definitely has some better-than-average songs on the album. After about 2/3 of the album is over I find it hard to listen to the remaining 1/3.  Amputechture is a beautifully crafted album, and after a few listens you'll start to realize this.  Tetragrammaton.

Have you even heard Octahedron yet? Just wondering since you said he hadn't a few weeks back.

I just LOVE the way Viscera Eyes goes into Day of The Baphomets...beautiful,,,,And the wailing in Tetra. Amp is a brilliant piece of work.

Well according to the poll results, seems like Amputechture's the chosen one...to be honest I've listened to most everything out of these 3 albums and "Amputechture" is the one which hit me the most Smile
They pushed down the envelope in matter of latin influences on it, much more than on the others, or is it just my impression? Ermm

Amputeccure was their peak imo.  I will vote for that.

Apparently I am the fifth person to vote Octahedron but the first one to voice it in the thread... Are you ashamed of your pick guys? Tongue

I don't like The Mars Volta one bit, but Octahedron is decent. I can't sit through more than 2 minutes of Bedlam, but a lot of people do like it.

I don't have Amputechture (and I don't plan on getting it, either) so I can't comment on that one.

I think all three are great, each of them have their own sound. Amp got my vote, it has a more jazz fusion sound that i like. Bedlam is has its funk metal moments that are great. Then Octa has amore stripped down sound than the rest of their albums, its not as crazy but still good.
Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights...

Octahedron, no contest

Amputechture is a distant second and Bedlam is their worst album.

Bedlam is excellent, even though not everyone here thinks so.
