I've read about this live albums from the original line-up of King Crimson, and am interested in getting them. However, given what I've read about them, most of the songs are repeated in both albums, and I've heard Vols 3&4 have even worst quality than 1&2. So, anyone who knows them, which one is worth getting? Or is it in the end getting both of them? Is the sound quality really so bad?

I can only advise you on vols.1&2. The sound quality is passable. Good not great. Some tracks are repeated but overall I'd still recommend it. I've heard that the sound quality one vols. 3&4 is horrible.

If you don't like unofficial recordings than make the light of the day in official recordings (like this case), then avoid this.

I didn't think the sound quality was that bad on 3&4. Don't get me wrong, its not good. Certainly a profuct of it's times, but, at least for me, it is tolerable. Although you do have to crank the sound. 3 is probably the worst.
Honestly, Vol 1 is the most nessacary IMO. Vol 2 is my least favorite. Which is unfortunate being they are sold together. Even though the songs repeat, I'm ok with it because I have no other matrerial from their era and theres enough different stuff in between to make up for it. (Similar to 70s KC live albums...I have too many versions of Starless!) Vol 3 I feel has the most engery and sheer recklessness out of the lot.
When I ordered my box set I thought the price was reasonable was four cds together, as opposed to buying 1&2 then going back for 3&4 later (if you decide). Honestly can't recall how much it was though.
So in the end, if you're a casual fan of this lineup of KC Vol 1&2 will probably suffice, but 3&4 ain't bad for "cheap".

I haven't heard volumes 3 & 4, but 1 & 2 are definitely worth getting if you like early Crimson.

Thanks a lot, it's been very useful. Though I still haven't made up my mind about wether to get only vol 1&2 or also 3&4. I guess it will depend on whether I can find the box-set with all 4 volumes or not. Though I didn't find the Filmore West Live series thing on the link given.

^ However, it bothers me how Court of the Crimson King appears twice, and in both cases it says it's only a fragment. I'm guessing that in Epitaph vols 1&2 it's got the complete version?
