I just bought the LP version of Phaedra, and it was a much different experience from the Phaedra I'd come to love....
It was much more Mellotron-lead than what I'd originally heard; the one I'd first heard had this constant keyboard arpeggio throughout, if that helps at all.... The album version had no arpeggios like that. Could any help me out, here? Are there different Phaedras? How many Phaedras should I own?

That's quite easily explainable actually.
It turns out you've posted this thread in the wrong sub forum |

Different editions often have different mixes and masterings. The equipment it is played on may be a factor as well. It could be the difference between a European and American version as well.

If it has this track listing:
1. Phaedra [Remix] (11:10)
2. Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares [Remix] (9:53) 3. Movements of a Visionary [Remix] (7:58) 4. Sequent C [Remix] (3:05) 5. Delfi (6:07) you have the 2005 re-recording
the original has this track listing:
1. Phaedra (17:35)
2. Mysterious Semblance At The Strand Of Nightmares (9:43) 3. Movements Of A Visionary (7:57) 4. Sequent C' (2:20) |

Phaedra does not blow my skirt up, no matter what version you have. It may well be the single most boring album in existence.

In your opinion
I find it to be one of the most atmospheric albums in existance and one of those rare items that takes on a completely new dimension when you play it really (really) loud.

Very often the original LP mixes get screwed up or altered when transfered to cd. Often the artist has nothing to do with the process and you get an engineer who decides he wants to mess with the mix while transferring it. You are not the first person I've heard wonder why the LP and CD versions are different.

Tangerine Dream has the unfortunate tendency of re-recording their material and making it terrible as far as I've heard. As for it being boring... totally wrong. I suggest to anyone who thinks its boring to go out for a walk in the middle of the night in a field of grass. Absolutely terrifying - makes me feel like I'm being chased by aliens. |

Specially in a really good stereo system ... the depth and mind rotations (only term I have for my inner trip), in it are the best ever!
Would you believe that the first time I heard Tangerine Dream, it was "Mysterious Semblance" and it scared the living wits out of me. When I hear it the 2nd time, I went ... oh my gawd ... and it's been history ever since!
Yes indeed ... it is one of the most far out of all musical experiences, but I'm not sure that these "progressive" folks will ever listen to it much ... too much ipod and earbuds for them!
That said, there are a few version of this, and TD has a 25th Anniversary version (on the DVD) and a couple of attempts at doing this live in the early days, which was impossible until they started getting their Ataris networked so they could repeat portions of the work and play it. In general, all their early material is all impromptu ... and you can see it on the many bootlegs and albums and releases.
The best one, for my ears, is still the original. I don't dislike any of the redo's, but I somehow think that the whole experience through the orgasm is now ... cut down and happens faster and is over way too soon! ... I never had that feeling with the original! Edited by moshkito - June 30 2010 at 22:01 |

The second Phaedra you are listening to comes from different part of the space-time continuum.
I honestly first heard Phaedra on LP. I also have it on CD and I didn't notice any difference. I've never tried a side by side comparison though. That whole Phaedra being boring I can't agree with. Maybe not exciting so much, but I still like it. Edited by Slartibartfast - July 01 2010 at 18:31 |

Has anyone heard the new vinyl edition? I was thinking about buying it but this thread made me suspicious of its contents.

Dean .. you remember the old line?
He just has to get stoned so he can open up his mind and get into the vibe of the music!
Maybe this is way too Tim Leary for him! I'm definitly not going to recommend "Seven Up" by Ash Ra Tempel for him!
Actually, if you play a synthesizer, it probably is boring for you ... because you can see what was done. But you are missing out on the visual story of the whole thing because you are stuck inside the instrument ... you have to drop the instrument ... in those days it was not about the imitation of all th eorchestral sounds with a synthesizer ... it was about creating new sounds and experiences ... and you are only listening to notes and knobs ... not the sounds they can emit and how they can influence your inner vision!

Someone dissed popol vuh's Affenstunde in a review recently. Still scratching my head why. I agree TD's remakes are way off the mark and unnecessary. I am not a fan of remasters anyway.
The original Phaedra is extraordinary and mysterious

If they were just remasterings I could live with it. But lots of things were added which weren't on the albums originally, and in the case of these albums less definitely is more. |
