Di Meola without a question, here. If only for the albums he's done with Return to Forever.

They're both wonderful. Di Meola is probably technically better, but Santana plays with more feel.
Draw.

I feel the same way, but the Di has come a long way with the feel thing.

Hate to be the one that breaks the tie here in favor of a non-latin american player, but I do like Di Meola's playing more than Santana's.

I absolutely love Carlos, as an SF native he was part of my musical culture, but as I'm listening to Al's playing on his Heart of the Immigrants CD today - some of his finest acoustic work - I gotta give it to DiMeola

They both Had Moments of Glory . And Both Equal in my opinion , but i'm gonna use my own Judgement in this Poll . So , as i am into Progressive Blues Rock more than Jazz Fusion , and to keep the balance , i choose Santana , i really like all his album during 40 years , even the commercial ones . Meola has also many Masterpieces & so many excellent albums /

Carlos Augusto Alves Santana..........Hands down, mixing soul, jazz, salsa, rock, blues and creating his own sound from all these.
Viva Santana!

Meoli is a far better and precise guitarist, but Santana played in better-sounding arrangements in my opinion. Both weren't the best composers, but Santana collaborations on his first five albums were all quite succesful. The problem with Santana however, is the fact that his guitar style isn't that accurate (during this period) and sometimes I dislike his out-of-pitch sound (especially on the debut!). To be honest, some of his tunes make me cruble because of the false notes, but hey.. I'm a guitarist myself. Meola has a perfect technique and sound and has influenced the guitar style of all major guitarists. Often people refer to Meola-style and Holdsworth-style, when referring to the use of plectrum. Meola it is.

A matter of taste indeed. And that's a good reason for me to give another vote to Carlos.

Santana tiene mucha alma (Carlos has soul). Al, not so much. |
Completely agree.
Santana is one of my favourite guitar players. Al is faster, but that's not enough. I enjoy his music but Santana has a wider range of variations and, as have been said, "has soul".

Santana is good, but gets pretty uninteresting. Al Di Meola just destroys. Al Di Meola is my choice. Land of the Midnight Sun is a fantastic album

I saw them together in the early 80's. Al opened for Carlos and they played together for the finale.

DiMeola has been one of my favorites since hearing his first solo album while I was in college. This boils down to personal taste, like choosing between prime rib or lobster for a wedding meal. Carlos has shown more versatility over the years, while I have never heard anyone play as precisely and fast as DiMeola. I see the only solution in sitting back and listening to both alternately over the course of an afternoon and thorougly enjoying the experience.
