Same here. But I voted Lighthouse Keepers.

I guess if it just doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you. I can't really convince you to think differently, but to my ears, those three songs are some of the most beautiful, haunting, exciting and epic pieces of music I've ever heard.

I'm with Josh on that. Three excellent pieces to my ears, but people's ears are accustomed to different types of music. It's a matter of taste/ experience. I liked the album on first listen, but had some problems with Hammill's histrionics, but I got beyond that. There was enough in the music for me to love that I kept on playing it and grew to thoroughly love the album. He to He and Godbluff were easier for me to really like at first. I happen to lake "crazier" forms of music than most, though beauty, though in the eye of the beholder, has to be there and I find beauty in Pawn Hearts, and there is sufficient contrast in the music to hold my interest. Music is in the ear of the behearer. There's a great deal of music I love that most wouldn't like and a great deal of loved music in PA that I don't like or find mediocre. Close to the Edge, for instance, I don't dislike, but I don't find it nearly as good as most here. That said, I respect that it does mean a lot to others even though it never had much of an impact on me (even when I was huge on Yes while 13 or 14, and Fragile was my favourite album). Anyway, definitely "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" for me. I do like "Close to the Edge", though.

Pawn Hearts was my first VDGG album. My first listen of it, I disliked it. I found it a little too chaotic at times and it took me a while to adjust to Peter Hammil's maniacal voice. But a few listens later, I loved it.

Missed this, definitely voting for Lighthouse. CttE is a very good track, Lighthouse is a great one. For one: I greatly prefer VdGG's vocals, and the atmosphere is amazing. CttE doesn't impress me as much, Gates of Delirium would have been a much harder choice.

I think that Pawn Hearts is one of the finest examples of overrating on PA. However, there is one outstanding track on this album. Unfortunately, this is not A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, but Man-erg.
Plague forms half of the evidence that VdGG's virtues are not to be found in 20+ minute tracks.

| Looking back on my review of this album, I said this of "Man-Erg:"
"Man-Erg" Soft piano and organ begin this much more pleasant track. I
love the soulful vocal
melody in the first several moments, and it may be my favorite part of
this album. After some
saxophone screeching, the pleasantness ends, as an odd and cacophonic
section takes over. All told,
this is my favorite track from the album, and essentially salvages it
from being banished from my
hearing it ever again.Although the last time I heard the album was when I reviewed it.

I think that "Close to the Edge" is one of the finest examples of overrating on PA. yes, a fine album, but where is the daring? all together much too tame. no, "Relayer" is a much better album than "Close to the Edge". here we find the daring that was missing in "Close to the Edge"
