Michael Jackson - Thriller
Prince - Purple Rain
Madonna - Like A Virgin
Janet Jackson - ?
Britney Spears - Oops I Did It Again and whatever else
Lady Gaga
Whitney Houston - whatever
Celine Dion - see Whitney Houston
Mariah Carey - see Celine Dion
i.e. it is pretty damn hard for a prog album to be considered overrated given they aren't even a blip amongst the conciousness of most of the living world.

True that Godbluff isn't the best VDGG album like some people say, but it's still a masterpiece. Not as much experimentation, but it has VDGG's tightest and most mature compositions in their career.
Now for the most overrated Prog album, I have two words: Misplaced Childhood.

I think LE ORME's ''Felona e sorona'' is way too overrated...Great concept, but musically speaking the previous two works of the band were a lot better.

I thought I'd check other people's comments before I'd type off on the subject and I can't put it any better than that. The whole point of this site for me is to explore strange new worlds of music, new civilizations of music, to boldly check out new forms of progressive music that few have before. Some artists do attract a lot of attention around here because a lot of us know them very well and appreciate their work. Concern yourself less with the rating and more with quality of the content. |

So what if this is what overrated means? Shouldn't we have a word for it and be able to discuss the concept? It sure is less cumbersome than titling a thread "Most Albums I Don't Like As Much As Other People Do." |

In the Court is revered for being the first true prog album, but 40 years on, it's pretty poor, Epitaph and the title track excepted.
The Wall isn't great, Godbluff leaves me cold (like all VDGG) and I completely fail to see why anything by PFM or Banco is so revered - their albums are 3* at best. Script is a bit overrated; I prefer Fugazi, Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws (but why didn't Script have Market Square Heroes on it??) Moonmadness isn't as quite as good as The Snow Goose but that's like saying Rafael Nadal isn't quite as good as Roger Federer; it's still brilliant. ITLOGAP in my favourite Caravan album and nearly merits 5*. But the album that gets my vote as most overrated is Harmonium's Si On Avait............etc. It's pleasant enough but never a masterpiece in a million years. |

As for prog album, I won't even start naming them. |

I agree with numbers 2 and 3 of the OP, and would like to add First and Volume 2 of The Soft Machine, any Yes albums after Howe left, Tarkus (only the title track is remotely worth bothering with!), Nursery Cryme, and... lots others I can't think of right now.

Thirteen albums here are all great, but since they are rated higher than number fourteen, they qualify as overrated by definition, imho.

I agree that Hot Rats is not close to the best Zappa album. I listened to it first because I heard it was the most accessible, and didn't like it. Then later I found Absolutely Free and Make a Jazz Noise Here and discovered his genius.

Ditto for the nineteen listed before number twenty one, excluding number fourteen of course.

I'm going to say "Selling England by the Pound" by Genesis. Great album, don't get me wrong, but it does not deserve to be the highest rated of all time on prograchives...
