I'm afraid I've only heard their sound track to the silent classic Nosferatu. Like most sound tracks it usually only makes sense if you've seen the film. I'm guessing most people on this site know of it. Worth picking up.

Man, Art Zoyd definitely isn't overrated.
However, I think I'd pick Musique pour l'Odyssée just over Génération sans futur.

Unfortunately I've only heard a few of them...their first three, and I believe the version of the first is the re-recorded version (I have the collection of the first three available on eMusic from when I had an eMusic account).  I really want to look into some of their others, especially their soundtrack to Metropolis as I love the movie and I'd be really interested to hear what they do with it.

First one, first recording off. The later re-recording might be worth mention as it is more fleshed out with the whole crew jumping in on the action, so might be better for the beginner. The first edition cover was my first avatar, and I hold an emotional attachment to it.

As others have mention the first three are essential.

If I were not accustomed to the band I'd recommend Phase IV. Only, for me, a slight step down from the first three (depending on the day/weather), and undoubtedly the most 'beautiful' and 'sensual' from that period. Some folk will site it as their best/favourite.

^ speaking of that, which one is the original album art?  is it the one with the guitar, bass, trumpet and violin overlapped, as shown on this site?

I love Art Zoyd.  The first seven are my favourites, and I also like Haxan very much and Les Champs des Larmes is also good.  The first three, in particular, are masterpieces and absolutely essential albums, imo, as I find them consistently excellent.

It has surprised me that Art Zoyd doesn't get more acclaim here (unlike Univers Zero and Present).  Les Espace Inquiets is a really underrated album.

My favourite is Phase IV, although the standard across all the albums up to Les Espaces Inquietes is remarkably high. The best thing is probably to get the Archives volumes 1 and 2, which gather up all the first 5 albums plus some non album material (including their first single, on which they sound almost unrecognisable).

The later albums are also good, but there's an increasing use of electronics and sampling which some may find a little off putting, plus Thierry Zaboitzieff left in the late 90s which further changed the sound.

I think the first three are the best three. but everything up to the mid-eighties is fantastic. Its been said by a few altready. Most of the later releases are interesting but none of them essential (atleast not as a pure music experience) imo.

My favorite is Generations Sans Futur just over the debut. (Love both original and re-recording of it).

Génération Sans Futur  is my fave.
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

As Art Zoyd is about my favourite band, I wanted to bring up a topic on it again. Though I, also, would choose Generation Sans Futur, I actually find Haxan utterly essential. Easily five star material for me.

For me it's either the original 1976 recording of the debut or the 1983 album Les Espace Inquiets. Everything in between is almost as good as well. I think the two albums they did in the mid-90s, Faust and Haxan, are almost as good as the early stuff.
