On these forums perhaps the most underrated band could be a split between all the early RIO movement groups as, despite having lurked for years, I've never seen more than sporadic discussion of them. Of course, people will enthusiastically recommend Henry Cow to one another, but hardly anyone ever explains why... I suppose I must nominate Etron Fou, being the band that gets the slightest share of attention.

Does the RIO/Avant classification scare people away? Stormy Six were mostly a folk band, Etron Fou and Art Bears could be considered post-punk... every band who played under the banner of the original RIO festivals had great passion, furious creativity and were often found bursting with humour. I believe each is cruelly over-looked.

The band I consider to be the most surprisingly underrated, or perhaps I should say "unrated", is Il Berlione (http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=5535).  A band from Japan (yes, with an Italian name!) with one superb and one very good album from the 1990s.

No idea on the availability of their albums these days.  I got them back when they were first released.
So if you're looking for some cool "obscure" albums, see if you can find them!  Smile

I tried to promote them few times before and posted some videos of their music. I'm happy you know them too, they are pretty obscure, even here. Thumbs Up

Trettioariga Kriget and The Enid are both quite underrated in my opinion.

Apart from these obscure bands with one or two LP, and/or a number of the bands who are coming from non english language countries, I think that Family is the most underrated (great) prog rock band.

On PA, no doubt ENO, compared to how much he has done for prog in general, the music indutri, not to mention the huge amount of supreeme prog music he has made in his own name.
Most of his albums got between 3 !! - 40 ratings.
An album like this :
Hard Candy 1994
Line-up / Musicians
Brian Eno.- synthesizer
Robert Fripp.- Guitar, Trumpet Guitar
Goeffrey Oryema.- Percussion
Richard Bailey.- Drums
Not a single review !!

He must be the most underrated  Maestro on PA

NB: Fripp as an solo artist, dosent get that much attension either, i guess in both cases it showes that PA members are often, not that interested in experimental music, more into Rock Music with a twist.
Nothing wrong with that, but PA itself covers a lot more ground. Thumbs Up

I think all Krautrock is underrated. Those were highly exprimental bands whose albums deserve more reviews and a higher rating.

Some bands that come to mind from Argentina are:

Crucis
Seru Giran (1st one specially)
Autumm Moonlight
Tanger
Factor Burzaco
Nexus
Zonda Projeckt
La Maquina de Hacer Pajaros
Invisible
Alas

Absolute most underrated band is:
Seventh Wonder

If ANYONE ought to be, they ought to be making enough money to support themselves on their music alone.  I have never heard another band with that much collective talent.

I'd say that Gong is rather unappreciated....very inconsistent output, but their best was jaw-droppingly good!

Just got their latest album Journeys End . I love it so I decided to look in the album review section to read some reviews and could only find twoConfused Case in point I suppose.

Brilliant album. Saw them perform it live. Sublime.

As I said in my review yesterday Dreadnaught is too good to be so obscure, i'm glad you mentioned them.

Your review was so positive I was thinking that you couldn't be right... but seriously you were right.

That band is untouchably good. Not only is it prog and insanely complex prog at that, it is also listenable and even your average hip-hop or pop music fan could find enjoyment out of it. How can you top that?

True, i'm glad you can see it too, their 'American Standard' album is much more rocky, funky but totally progressive.
Check out Ballbuster on utube, it's awsome!!
