I'm a really big fan of Comus's album "First Utterance." What are some bands (prog folk or otherwise) that you would recommend who are stylistically similar (if there even are any)?

If a thread with this title were made in General Discussions I bet it would get locked very quickly. LOL

I like to think that First Utterance exists in a world of it's own, I've never heard anything quite like it.

If you like the softer, "herald-y" side of it, you'd probably like the band Espers.

As for the scary stuff, nothing comes close, sorry

Surprised it took this long for this band/album to be mentioned! Definitely second. Probably the closest thing that exists to Comus.

As for this Spirogyra...I don't know. Sure its darkish folk music but for me its no where near Comus...in pretty much any terms...at least for me. Don't let my opinion discourage you though Mr. H...they might fit your tastes better than mine. Smile

Yeah, but with Jan Dukes De Grey the only similarity is lyrically; the music sounds nothing the same

Well, judging by your avatar, you apparently enjoy a bit of prog metal too...

This may be a stupid question, but are you an Opeth fan yet?

I am probably the only person in the entire world populated with 7 billion people to think Supertramps first two albums might sound a tad similar to 70s Comus

Comus are an unique band, not much out there sounds exactly like them.

The only thing coming close to Comus to my ears is Banda do Casaco (especially the first album, but the following two are also similar). If you don't mind not understanding the lyrics, you should give that a listen.

You might want to explore some of the Strawbs early albums and acoustic compilations.

Something bearing similarities to Comus but from a completely different universe is RPI's Jumbo album Vietato ai Minori di 18 Anni.

The abovementioned Spirogyra and Espers are a good call, I would perhaps add Fern Knight in the same vein.

Finally, you always get the new Comus album and the highly Comus-influenced Storm Corrosion.
Bigger on the inside.

Tea & Symphony's debut has that crazed weirdo kind of thang going as well, and my guess is that most people into First Utterance too would fancy this one.

I would recommend Lasher Keen - that's the only music that reminds me of Comus

Here's a few that might work for you:

Long Live Death - a little more laid back than Comus but there are definite stylistic and thematic similarities.

Faun Fables, especially 'Mother Twilight' and 'Early Song'.

Ache - 'Green Man'.  These guys are listed as Symphonic but I'm not sure that's the right place for them.

And Lisa o Piu did a live album with Roger Wootton where they cover several Comus songs that's pretty good.
