I've pulled out the first three Crack the Sky albums from the chest up in the attic. No doubt thier eponymous release is fantastic followed by Animals Notes that showed almost a glam rock influence. The fourth release Safety in Numbers wasn't a bad album but leader John Palumbo leaving in the middle of production does show.

I know there has been different incarnations of the band over the years. Is there any that are worth listening to, if so, can you make a recommendation?

All I can recommend is the three albums you already listed. I also have From the Greenhouse and Raw, and they're not worth it. Still, those other three albums are nice.
