Us and Them is always a favorite. But the best sax moment to me is David Jackson vomiting Man-Erg live a few seconds after 3:20…. http://youtu.be/9Eu5gj-CYY8

Frozen Rose-Caravan Jimmy Hastings
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

There are many, but the one that comes to mind is not a solo but the accompaniment to Van der Graaf Generator's Pilgrims. David Jackson swings. Also tops is Mel Collins' work on 801's Listen Now, but he's been great on everything from Bryan Ferry to Tears for Fears.

Well, I'm a saxophonist (flute/clarinet too) and guitar teacher.
After learning sax, you will notice the harmonic field exploration is musically speaking, the most important for the listener experience and for the musician appreciation. For example...
My goal isn't to brag or hurt any fan, so I will not tell you which one, but some solos mentioned in this thread are very predictable for a saxophonist. Of course, sometimes the circunstances requires simple things, and the simple thing in the right place achieves the perfection. But talking about the favorite sax solo in prog, I can't choose the Slash of the sax.
Some of my favorite prog sax solos aren't into hard prog, but well done and clever performances into Crossover and prog related Jazz/Fusion.
Hard to choose a favorite. From the classic sax oriented prog albums, my favorite is Third (Soft Machine). Well, almost everything that comes from canterbury featuring sax is wonderful.
Now, if you wanna trip into the instrument, take the album Scarcity of Miracles (fripp+collins=what do you expect?)
And if you want something more energetic, try Naked City, Mr Bungle and Arrigo Barnabe (the debut album from each artist).
Now, if you're wondering what the sh*t a boring musician like me would approve as perfection in sax experiments besides the well known Coltrane, Coleman and company, taste this:

Gong - Master builder VDGG - Arrow, Sleepwalkers, Lemmings Pink Floyd - Us and them Jethro Tull - A Passion Play (which is truly incredible, considering Ian Anderson had just recently begun playing sax).
