Both of these movements were at thier apex in the early-mid 80's. Which one do you think has had the greatest impact on progressive music generally?

... even though I get the feeling that Rush had more to do with it than this entire genre of music. Still, it's undeniable that many artists of today were/are avid Judas Priest and Iron Maiden fans. Neo Prog was/is based more on nostalgia for the past while NWOBHM actually moved the music forward from its basic style of the early '70s. PS Please read the entire question before voting! As awesome as some of the metal is, I'm gonna go with neo-prog because it seems to blow me away more than the latter.

I'm sure that NWobHM has had a much bigger impact on progressive music generally. Neo-Prog has mostly made an impact on Neo-Prog/ Neo-Symph and is not that progressive itself (Neo-Prog also has influenced quite a number of Symph leaning Prog Metal acts too, but then NWoBHV has had a big influnce on Prog Metal).

Although, I absolutely love Neo-Prog and I think it has brought us the crème de la crème of prog music, I have to admit that more bands - especially prog-metal bands - have been inspired by NWoBHM, and because there are só many metal bands - they could virtually outnumber all other subgenres combined! - the NWoBHM movement probably has had a larger inpact on the current prog-scene...

Neo prog (mainly in the form of IQ and Marillion) has given me almost as many memorable moments as the symphonic prog of the 70s.
NWOBHM has only contributed a few. |

I would say it's the other way around :
- Genesis influenced Marillion - Black Sab, Led Zep and deep Purple (noen of them are prog though) influenced Iron Maiden And why is NWOBHM in a prog poll ? Def Leppard, Saxon, Diamond Head, Raven, Tygers of Pan Tang, Girlschool: very prog indeed... Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Diamond Head had a huge influence on thrash metal as far as I know. |

Neo prog is my favorite, but it had an almost nonexistent impact on progressive music. And since the question is "which one do you think has had the greatest impact
on progressive music generally?, I will vote accordingly. To deny the influence that Iron Maiden, Saxon, Judas Priest, and Diamond Head had on bands like Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Queensrÿche, and Symphony X is blasphemous, whereas the influence from IQ, Pendragon, Marillion (well, maybe not them), and Arena is much smaller. There is still a debt to be owed, but NWOBHM revolutionized music. Of course, neo prog is still alive and well, while NWOBHM is pretty dead.
But, in answer to the original question, NWOBHM had a bigger impact on prog, even though I prefer neo-prog. |

NWOBHM was/is a movement more influential in many modern bands than Neo-prog but it is a strong movement as well..

The question was who is more influential to prog. As the wondrous chap said, above me, DT, Queensrche, Fates Warning, most classic prog metal in general, and a lot of non-prog got their cues from NWOBHM. |
