Yes - Jon Anderson was too short and Rick Wakeman too blonde.
Genesis - Public schoolboys, all their music was just to impress girls and they failed miserably.
ELP - Lots of farting sounds interspersed with ridiculous frenzied drumming. How anyone can like them is beyond me.
King Crimson - Robert Fripp ,what an arsehole
Jethro Tull - Ian Anderson is too bald
Rush - Just a wimpy version of Dream Theater
In fact all PROG ROCK is overrated.I'm off to the Britney Spears site.Bye.

Talking about who is and isn't "prog" is incredibly pompous.
Oh well, I suppose such is the mindset of the average proghole . . .

Marillion, then Camel, Ruh and Kansas. I doubt anyone overrates Asia. And I know I will be crucified for this post.

Pink Floyd was ok up to a certain point. Not the most virtuoso players
on their instruments, but they had some ideas. "Ummagumma" was very
experimental for that time. "Atom Heart Mother" is somewhat weak; good
ideas not explored enough, and the orchestral instrumentation of Ron
Geesin leaves a lot to be desired. "Meddle" is one of their best. "Wish
You were Here" was the last album of them I can listen to without
turning furious.

Genesis; i have some 10 albums or something, that they was as huge as they were is crazyness all other groups from the 70's who played almost the same style was way better
All the neo crap = the new sh*t is way overrated... oh i forgot the prog metal that is wimpy sh*t... straight metal is ok but this is just plain simple sh*t.
Sorry all prog metal heads, please don't take it personal but prog metal ain't prog, just very lame metal...

ELP. It's a mystery to me why they are always included in the big 10.

Why aye mustard mits I reckon that King Crimson's Thrak was a mess of noise which may have been progressive but was plain awful. Yes in the 80's Later Genesis, Asia were rubbish and to think i bought the album and went to Wembley indoor cemetry to see them in 82? Absolute trash.Marillion were imposters but i like them now and again, Early Rush, late 80's rush,Kansas but overall i think i'd say a toss up between Asia and Dream Theatre as most overarated

Judging from the posts so far all sub-genres of prog are overrated.
Yes, I agree, so are irony and sarcasm.
But they're the only things I've got left..., so.....
Actually, religion and the lack thereof, food, sex, sleep, drugs, literature, Internet, death, life, the universe and the plants on my windowsill are overrated too.
And I stand by my claim that grindcore, gongorism, Gregorian chants, gothic architecture, gory movies and every other artisitic movement starting with the letter 'g' are criminally overrated.

The results of this discussion so far are really rather disappointing and dismal.
Brand X, Dream Theater, Spock's Beard all getting slammed!? what for exactly?
Bands like Marillion are so much more overrated especially when I constantly read about people saying the technical proficiency/prowess/originality whatever is a mandatroy feature of prog. There's a lot of neo-prog that just doesn't feature that and not only are a lot of songs basic rock with nothing particularly unique they still get hailed as being incredible....sorry I smell a big fat contradiction in terms. Don't get me wrong, this is not a MUST requirement for me personally but the point is that band's such as Brand X, Dream Theater...will often get highly regarded due to their abilities which most certainly are obvious and present whether you like them or not.
Oh and by the way Kansas may not be the most technical band to ever exist but they don't exactly get overrated do they anyway!
Change the record someone and get some of those more positive topics rolling
