Cale is the progressive elements and had some excellent solo albums.
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

It's like a battle between two cities: Paris (1919) and Berlin .

I voted for Cale.

John Cale, because he successed  outside pop music territories...more eclectic than Lou Reed

Lou Reed ... definitely ... from the underrated first album to Magic & Loss, the man had many great songs ... not to mention the fact that he seriously outwrote Cale during their time together in VU

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."
