I wouldn't say it's genuinely awful (though plenty obviously would!) It's probably the title and ridiculous cover photo that sealed it's reputation. I actually like the title track, Canario and a lot of the second side which has some great playing on it. The real low point is probably Taste of My Love. If you can get through the lyrics of that without laughing incredulously you're a better man than I! Oh, I vote BSS by the way. Edited by Cactus Choir - August 20 2010 at 09:04 |

Really don't mind if you sit this one out.
My words but a whisper, your deafness a shout. |

..I'm guessing ELP were being 'ironic' when they made that album, certainly when they posed for that cover... ?

I'm not too sure about the irony - Greg Lake's big cheesy grin and chest hair doesn't seem overly ironic to me. I remember one review said it looked like they'd washed up on a desert island looking for a Bee Gees fancy dress party!

Not ironic. Keith Emerson fought Atlantic over that cover. They all hated it. As for the music. A tired burnt out ELP on the tail of a huge tour which was financially a disaster forced to make an album by the record company. They hated where they were and Greg and Carl scarpered leaving Keith to finish the album and promote it. Edit. Atlantic also wanted some hit singles, hence the "poppy" nature. I wouldn't have thought so. But I did get to see ELP on TOTP because of it!

But why did they pose for it if they hated it - was the photographer holding them at gunpoint? Blacksword, I think the album scraped into the UK Top 40 for a week or two but way below where the previous original studio albums had charted. |

Not really. Given time apart they could have made a very nice album ( there was talk of getting back to basics I believe, but I may be thinking of another time).as it was this album finished the band.

I suppose you have a point, though if you pose on a beach showing off your hairy chest and wearing a medallion it does seem quite obvious how the photo might turn out. |

Maybe their images were super-imposed on that beach! Perhaps the original photo's were taken back stage after a triumphant gig..or agaist some proggy sci-fi landscape...
Second thoughts..probably not.. |

Although I really love the first 4 albums, and listen to them all the time, as well as bits and pieces of the others, I think Trilogy is my favourite.

If you like the first four or five ELP albums, then Black Moon is THE other one you should add to your collection.
And after that - buy Keith's more recent album with Marc Bonilla.

The debut, closely followed by BSS.
But my overall favorite track is the Tarkus suite.

What? Love Beach is my favorite!
Seriously, it's probably Trilogy for me. I don't really love it, but it's still better than their other albums IMO. |
