I was heavily into Moonmadness (back in seventy whatever) and then Ferguson left ( or was sacked I don't remember) and this "Sinclair" fellow joined.
Annnnyway. My friend bought Raindances and I just took against it. Didn't like it at all. It was nothing like my beloved Moonmadness! So i dismissed it.
On hearing it again about 10 years ago the veil fell from my eyes (or my ears?) and I instantly loved it! What a waste....I could have know it for years. The stupidity of youth.
Excellent album.

First Light and Skylines are my favorite instrumentals from Rain Dances. Elke with Brian Eno has this depressing flow to it. It's difficult to describe. Rain Dances is more extreme in it's diversity of style in the composition when compared to Moonmadness. Songs like "Tell Me", Metrognome", and "Highways of the Sun" make the difference. The vocals of Richard Sinclair and the sax playing of Mel Collins was quite a contrast to the style on Moonmadness. I wished Breathless (follow up album), could have been this good. Rain Dances was a nice change in the band's musical direction.

First Light - One of the finest songs Camel ever made
Tell Me - Lazy, languid and just so Camel in evolving state- beautiful
Unevensong Song - As the title great changes and shift, tons of energy, especially as it plays out at the end.
One Of These Days I'll Get An Early Night - Brilliant groove, notwithstanding Sinclair's bass and Mel Collin's sax ( i think)
Moonmadness is my personal fave of Camel but this album for me was a perfect follow on and never disappoints

Excellent album. |
After Moonmadness, Rain Dances was and remains a bit of a soft offering from the boys, but it's fine in its own right. As for Mr. Sinclair replacing the much-missed Doug Ferguson, I recall seeing the new lineup (including Collins) after Doug left due to artistic differences (I've read) in Pacific Beach, Calif. During a break between songs, someone in the know ecstatically called out Sinclair's name which was met by someone a few rows in front of me loudly retorting, "BUG OUT!" This was followed by a boisterous, hearty laugh by the Fergusan fans. If only they had appreciated that the band was now being augmented by two prog greats - Collins and Sinclair.

Some intriguing and nice thoughts there by all. The album is very mellow but its a work of beauty for sure.
