Just coming on the scene and newly signed to Lasers Edge records is Chicago band District 97.  This band consists of a core group of friends that have been playing together for quite some time,  a female cellist from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and a top 24 American Idol  finalist  on vocals.  These guys maybe on to something special. A healthy dose of prog metal some very heavy symphonic elements and healthy dose of Red era KC all blended into a modern sound.   They have been signed to play CalProg this October and next Springs Rosfest.

Check them out they have three samples on their web page under media.

Also their Youtube page:

And here is an interview with them:

And one review of their soon to be released CD:

Looking forward to seeing these guys in about 6 weeks. Smile

I also learnt their existence recently. As for the overall music character, the element of symphonic Heavy might be strong as the result.

Very interesting band. Might be fit for Crossover, I'll ask the team for an evaluation.

Thanks Harmonium.  I think these guys maybe onto something.  Edgy, great energy, some pop and metal and really difficult passages and very nice melodies. The first song Can't take you with me on their web site.reminds me of Umphrey's McGee in spots in the instrumental parts.  It is going to be fun watching this live.

Team (think Me) will listen to these samples soon. Once I get up from bed actually.
There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

YES. Melodic, layered X-over Prog. Sure thing.
